So now we have a pandemic. Swine flu, who’s politically correct name is H1N1, and shall thus be known as Swine Flu on this blog, is creating world wide panic. So far in the US, just over 16,000 confirmed and suspected cases have resulted in 57 deaths. Worldwide, almost 28,000 cases have resulted in 141 deaths. All of this sounds alarming, but to put it into perspective, the US has over 36,000 flu deaths per year and that number worldwide is 500,000 or more. Why are countries and people in full bore panic mode?
Obviously, the publicity and the fact that the World Health Organization has now called this a Pandemic. That sounds really important, but there is more than meets the eye. A pandemic basically means the flu has spread to more than two regions or countries. Most people consider a pandemic to be a global epidemic, but that is not true. Even the term epidemic means nothing more than the number of cases exceeded the “expected” number in a region. Deaths from the disease are not a consideration. And the H1N1 – swine flu – is a fairly mild strain killing fewer than the ordinary flu. And the numbers infected are declining in the Northern Hemisphere, as is the norm for summer months.
Why is this a conspiracy?
First, one must look at the virus itself. It is a new flu virus. It is a combination of bird flu, swine flu and human flu. The possibility of this combination happening in nature is very unlikely. The possibility of this being created in a lab is far more likely. Adrian Gibbs, an Australian researcher, believes this may have been created by man and released due to human error.
But was it error, or intentional? Can someone make money from this? Absolutely. The World Health Organization (WHO), based in Switzerland, pronounced this an pandemic yesterday and urged drug manufacturers to hurry production of a vaccine. Today, Switzerland pharmaceutical giant Novartis AG announced they have produced the first batch of vaccine. 30 governments have placed orders and the WHO’s pandemic pronouncement forces the remaining countries to take action, like ordering the vaccine. Another alternative is to stock up on Tamiflu, manufactured by Switzerland’s Roche Holding AG.
So, we have a flu virus that looks to be a designer bug, a rapidly produced vaccine and a Swiss pharmaceutical connection to Swiss based WHO all aligned to dump billions of dollars into Swiss banks.
This brings up three predictions:
- Switzerland will be the first country to shake off the recession.
- If you add Swiss Pharmaceuticals to your portfolio you will shake off your own recession.
- Tom Clancy will come out with a new book soon.
Who would have thought capitalism could do so much in such a short time?
