Thank You RPV Chairman Mullins for Taking a Stand Against Ray Allen!

If you haven’t read this article in the Richmond Times Dispatch by Jeff Schapiro about the political cancer Ray Allen and Pat Mullin’s stand against the most radically divisive consultant in politics today, you need to click the link now and read it. I will be quoting from the article, but it is well worth the time to read it.

If you are not familiar with Ray Allen, just think back to the nastiest most vile political mailers you have received and it is safe to assume that Ray Allen was behind them. And also recall that Ray Allen’s partner, Boyd Marcus, endorsed Terry McAuliffe and actually worked to get this far left wacko elected as governor.

It is my insider activist that Ray Allen is a cancer on Virgiia politics and the major reason the Republican Party is divided today. I have never met a more despicable man who is always seeking to stoop to the lowest level of personal attacks and mud slinging to win – no matter the consequences.

And it just so happens I have been running a poll on Va Right! to assess the opinion of the readers about Ray Allen. How bad is this man despised by Conservatives? Well, far worse than Obama, believe it or not.

Feel free to take the poll if it is still open. As of this writing, the tally for the question “Who is the Bigger Threat to Virginia’s 7th District?” between Ray Allen and Barack Obama is Allen worse 77%, Obama worse 23%.

But I have to applaud Pat Mullins the Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia for the bold stance he has taken to distance the party from the main source of division. Sure we would still find things on which to disagree, but Allen fans the flames and his actions drive permanent wedges between Republicans.

From the article linked above:

Ray Allen is a slash-and-burn Republican campaign consultant with numerous impressive — and bloody — wins. Allen is now best known for the race he wasn’t supposed to lose: U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s shocker defeat for renomination to a poorly financed nobody, Dave Brat.

The Cantor flameout last month is heralding recrimination, revenge and factionalism. Allen figures prominently in this, though on Tuesday he showed no sign of directly engaging his detractors.

And several of us have received threats of violence, and even death threats, by those Allen has so enraged against the Conservatives that stood with Dave Brat. Allen is like a match to gasoline. Every political campaign I have been involved with where Allen was involved has been an exercise in sociopathy. Allen has no morals, no scruples and knows no lines he will not cross. The fallout from his actions and the divisions after the campaign is over cannot be understated. If you find two Republicans that hate one another, smart money is on a Ray Allen connection to the nexus of the feud.

The article continues:

Mullins is angry over posts on conservative blogs in which Allen is said to have threatened the bankruptcy of the state Republican Party as a step toward restoring it to Establishment control. Allen denies the claim.

Now Schapiro wasn’t too clear on exactly what was angering Mullins. The fact that Conservative Blogs like Va Right! published the story about Allen’s threats – which were heard by multiple sources – or the threat itself. But the context of the rest of the article leads me to believe the threat by Allen is what (and should!) have angered Mullins.

(And as a response to the threat, I sent in my dues to the RPV.)

But the next bit was a very strong message from Mullins to Allen:

Mullins is striking first, hitting Allen where it hurts: in the checkbook. On Monday, the chairman said the party is no longer doing business with Allen’s direct-mail shop. Through the GOP, the firm collected $1.2 million last year. With Mullins’ decision, Allen can’t use the party’s discounted postal rates.

For Allen, having Cantor as a client presumably was a magnet for others. If Cantor won, so did Allen. This may be the first indication that Cantor’s defeat is cutting into Allen’s billables.

To cocktail party Republicans, Allen hastened Cantor’s downfall. They point to television advertising and direct mail that gave Brat something he couldn’t buy because he didn’t have two nickels to rub together: name identification.

“Ray probably ran the worst campaign we’ve ever seen in Virginia,” said Mullins. “I really think Ray cost Eric that election.”

The article covers the Allen scheme to drain the treasury of the 7th District Committee and send the bulk of the money to the RNC and the NRCC, two inside Washington Republican organizations. Pat Mullins has called on RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to send the money back to Virginia.

I have stated before and will state it again. Any candidate that uses Ray Allen for anything will not receive an endorsement from me. If you hire Ray Allen, you are immediately disqualified from an endorsement. Period. And if you hire Allen for a primary contest, your Republican opponent will probably get the endorsements of this blog.

I have not always seen eye to eye with Pat Mullins, but this action and several other recent statements by Mullins has raised his stock in my eyes.

Getting rid of Ray Allen is the first step in healing the rift within the party. It will never heal with Allen’s hand in the pockets of Virginians.

Thanks, Pat. You did the right thing for party unity here.
