Just as I thought would happen:  Joe Morrissey has decided to run as an independent.

Del. Joseph D. Morrissey, D-Henrico, announced Tuesday that he is running for his 74th House District seat as an independent.

“We have already pre-filed 389 signatures, and we are filing some more. I’ll be running as an independent on Jan. 13,” Morrissey said in a phone interview while on the way to the Henrico County Courthouse, shortly before the filing deadline.

My only comment is:  NO DUH!  When the Dems came up with the Rhodesia style “primary” for Monday evening, I knew Morrissey would not fall into their trap – run and be barred to run as an independent under Virginia’s “Sore Loser” law.  So, he would run as an independent.  The law only requires 125 signatures.  389 ought to be enough.  And he might win.

The Dems in a “primary” that sounded like a football score, nominated a former Teamsters union official – Kevin Sullivan – by a 24-16 vote!  I doubt either Sullivan or his Republican opponent will be household names for the voters.  Sullivan will have intra-party competition in the general election primary – and not from Morrissey, either, who has $90,000 or so in the bank for campaigns!

David Lambert, CEO of Lambert Optical and son of the late state Sen. Benjamin J. Lambert III., also decided to withdraw his bid Saturday.

“I wouldn’t say (the nomination process) was a sham, but it wasn’t done in a way that was operable for anyone to get in it,” Lambert said Monday, adding that it was also not set up for the “people in the district to have a voice for who they want to pick.”

But Lambert said he has not changed his plans to run in the June 2015 primary.

So it appears that there will be three candidates for the 74th delegate seat in the Tuesday special election on January 13, the day before the election.  Turnout ought to be small, maybe couple of thousand votes at most.  Better pray there is not a blizzard on Tuesday January 13!

Don’t be fooled:  Morrissey could win – he’ll campaign as the underdog:

  • Morrissey has been given the issue to argue that he has been unfairly treated by the Democratic Party apparatus.
  • Morrissey can play to the issue that black voters were disenfranchised by the process, too.
  • None of the hopefuls appear to be African-American, either.  (A majority of the voters in the district are I am told African-American!)
  • Add to that a bit of redemption – a story that many will agree with – We’ll see a pastor or two on the campaign trail with Morrissey maybe even campaign pixs from jail – after all Eugene V. Debs ran for President in 1920 from federal prison!
  • Some – maybe many people will have to grudgingly admit that they admire Morrissey’s fighting spirit.
  • Finally, this firehouse “primary” might very well start a fire among local Dem party regulars.

It is a gift that has kept on giving – for both Morrissey and the GOP.  My Rhodesia flag (betcha you didn’t know I have a small Rhodesia flag, didn’t you?  I am a serious flag buff!  But I keep flags like Rhodesia hidden away at home most of the time.  My Zimbabwe flag is in my office as I know believers in that nation and hope to go there on a missions trip someday – Lord Jesus willing!) stays up at the blog spot until Jan 13.

Now I have not yet spoken with the GOP hopeful but I probably will and he may very well get my help.  We’ll see (I think it is too late for anyone else to get into the race – it might be too bad the Libertarians don’t have ballot access after all!) what will happen.  It’ll be fun to watch.  Perhaps fun like watching a train wreck is fun.

Can you tell us anything about Republican Congressman Michael Grimm? Apparently he plans to continue to “serve” also? Felony was it not? Not worth mention?

    Stupid Question.

I forgot that just as all Republican tax increases are considered good, all Republicans are also granted “media immunity” by the all Right owned mainstream media. If the silence about Grimm is not proof, nothing is.

Far as Joe goes? Remember these gifts that keep on giving for Republican’s. Mark Sanford and Kevin Yoder.

Oh yea, I know it’s always different. Just like McDonnell vs. Blagojevich, it’s just plain different. Ha, ha, ha!

I do agree that Grimm should quit or be ousted. But I do not find that interesting. McDonnell is not a crook. Period. (Blagojevich seemed to indeed be the crook.) I hope and pray the judge will give community service. I am not sure why the media does not cover Grimm. But it is not because the media is right wing. Mark Sanford was not convicted of any crime and I do not know about Yoder. And Sanford has redeemed himself – tried to get back with his wife, that did not work, decided not to see the Argentine woman so he is single and seems to be a good representative.

Thanks Gene for reading and challenging my assertions. That is healthy. Thanks again.
