The action of the Carroll County (MD) Commissioners is starting to be heard around the country. Not only on Freedom’s Phoenix, the Daily Paul and Before It’s News (I was behind that effort!) but also here, here and here. Now it’s great to see public support; there was several blogs with public ridicule but that is to be expected. (I ain’t linking to the anti-commissioners sites – find them yourself!)
Now, the people are starting to be heard. Kathy Fuller wrote a magnificent letter to the editor in the Carroll County Times. Some highlights:
Unfortunately, there is an illusion created that sustainability programs happen with a willing effort of the local community. In reality, sustainability initiatives happen with a small handful of relatively unknown people using ideas and goals pushed in training they receive as part of the initiative. The training, the ideas and the goals originate not from our local citizens, but from effective, strategic organizations well outside the county and often the country. It becomes manipulation of the local population.
Thanks to our new commissioners, who support the rights of the citizens of this county, our residents can now go back to charting Carroll’s future based on our own needs and desires and not based on goals derived from state or international organizations. What state legislators, federal regulators and international organizations believe to be in our best interest is usually very different from what we believe it to be. We have seen too much of that disconnect in the last few years.
Fuller ends with the thoughtful position that those who belittle property rights either do not own any or want to control somebody elses! Well done! Please, others in Carroll County, support the revolution! Support your county commissioners. If you live somewhere else under the thrall of ICLEI, get to work! You have my support.
