The problems with Obamacare continue to mount.

1. Fox reports that colleges have had to cancel health insurance for students because Obamacare coverage requirements make the insurance premiums prohibitively expensive. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/11/18/students-suffer-sticker-shock-from-obamacare/ . This is, of course, the same basic reason for the well publicized cancellation of individual policies.

2. Fox also reports that $4.4 billion has been doled out in aid to all states (except Alaska which took nothing — God save Sarah Palin’s state) to implement state exchanges. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/11/18/feds-gave-4b-to-states-to-start-obamacare-sites/ . (Not all states implemented state exchanges, in fact most did not.) The largest aid amounts went to the usual suspects: CA $910 million, NY $401 million. Also $245 million went to OR which has yet to enroll its first person because of a problematic website which requires an applicant to complete a 14 page application.

You should note that the feds spent $174 million on the federal website which covers enrollment in the 36 states that did not implement state exchanges. Assuming the money spent in the 14 states and DC (e.g. CA, NY, OR) that did establish state exchanges was well spent and consistent with the purposes of the grant, this gives you some idea of the additional money which may have to be committed to the federal exchange to finally make it work for the rest of the country.

You can go to http://www.atr.org/obama-administration-spent-point-billion-state-a7994 to view the state by state totals and also see the vague justification for the grants. I suspect the largest grant on a per capita basis was made to VT, a whooping $208 million for a state with one House representative and a total population of 600,000. (On the same basis, DC is not far behind at $181 million.) Other grant amounts: CT $184 million, NC $98 million, VA $7 million.
