The Significance of Fred Gruber’s Victory in the Brat / Cantor Primary Race

The election of Fred Gruber as Chairman of Virginia’s 7th Congressional District yesterday was a huge upset for Eric Cantor. My coverage of the story is here.

And while defeating Linwood Cobb, Eric Cantor’s top Lieutenant, was a huge upset, the significance of  this victory goes beyond yesterday’s primary. As Conservatives battle to retake the Republican Party from the Progressive Republican usurpers, every victory is important and every loss a learning opportunity.

In Virginia Beach, the Middle Aged Eric Cantor and his paradoxically named Young Guns moved in and ambushed the Mass Meeting held by the 2nd District, and when the smoke cleared, more than a thousand potential Delegates were improperly “slated”. Slating is the process of taking away the votes of a large number of Delegates and giving them to a handful of individuals that are hand picked by the people behind the slating. In the Virginia Beach case, more than 1,000 Delegates had their votes stripped away and given to 34 people hand picked by the Cantor team.

Fortunately, this was overturned on appeal and all of the Delegates were approved.

But this opened up the eyes of the activists on the ground and awakened the sleeping grassroots giant. And when Cantor came in to Henrico County prepared to ambush the meeting and disenfranchise the Delegates in favor of his own cronies, we stopped them.

But the ire of the grassroots has become palpable as the underhanded dirty tricks and lies of the Cantor regime has grown. The blow-back on Cantor has been massive. Voters do not like a bully and while the diminutive Cantor hardly strikes fear into the hearts of anyone in his way, Cantor’s money is usually an effective weapon to quash dissent and force his will on the people.

But not with grassroots.

Cantor has taken off the gloves and stopped pretending to be nice. He is in the fight of his life with Dave Brat and he knows it. He has moved to lie, steal votes and cheat.

Lie:

Cantor has called Dave Brat a liberal because he is a College Professor. As Brat has pointed out, so are a number of Republicans. Tommy Norment, a Republican State Senator is a Professor at UVA and Delegate Kirk Cox, a teacher.

Steal:

Cantor tried to slate votes in several Counties and Cities and has had some success, while the largest incursions were overturned.

Cheat:

The 7th District Convention was supposed to be held at a High School in the West End of Richmond. At the last minute, only days before the Convention, Linwood Cobb and Eric Cantor moved the location to the Hilton Hotel in the same general area. And it appears that just before the move of venue, Cantor and Cobb bought up every single meeting room in the Hotel to prevent Dave Brat anf Fred Gruber from holding any meetings or gathering supporters. Dave Brat was forced to meet at a place across the street, the only venue within walking distance. And the hotel is in the middle of a shopping center and has very limited parking. People were forced to park far away and hope their cars would not be towed.

So the results yesterday with Gruber defeating Cobb 52% to 48% show that people are on to Eric Cantor. And they are fed up with him. But more than that, it proved that Eric Cantor is vulnerable. Despite his massive piles of money that comes from power, the grassroots have become angry. Angry at being used and abused. And yesterday shows that the voters are ready to replace Eric Cantor.

And it also shows that money isn’t everything.

Take heart those of you who are more than ready see Cantor retired. This ios proof positive that Dave Brat can be our next Congressman. We need to work hard and keep our head in the game. Cantor will continue to lie, steal and cheat. But hard work and honesty can defeat lies and money.

A group of people who are all over 50 should not be calling themselves Young Guns. It’s ridiculous.
