The FIFA seems in more trouble than usual: Accusations of payoffs and good old fashioned “ol’ boy” stuff (we should perhaps be grateful they are still using dollars for bribes today!0 have placed the soccer federation in the news for bad stuff. Even a name from the past – Henry Kissinger – may be asked to bring order and ethics to a great organization. Let me, a mere Upward soccer coach, be presumptuous to give advice to a former Secretary of State and Nobel Peace Prize winner: Abolish the off-sides rule and replace it with a three or five seconds rule for the goal area for attackers.
This is hardly a new idea. Jim Spiegel suggests abolishing the off sides rule in this blog entry (he’s a professor at one of the universities I admire much – Taylor University in Indiana – great Christian institution) and it was seen as a way to liven up Major League Soccer here.
My take as a political blogger and sometimes Upward soccer coach is this: Abolish the off-sides rule BUT have a three second (could be as much as five) limit on how long a offensive player can be in the penalty area (that area could be enlarged for this rule only). This would increase the scoring BUT not tilt it unfairly toward the offense.
BTW, Upward is a great sports program. it is patently but not offensively Christian in orientation and it allows kids to learn the rules and discover if they have genuine talent. I recommend it! (If anyone is interested, here’s a great place to learn more about Jesus and how He can save you from your sins!)
