Tom Shields Donations From Unions Gays and The Democrat Party

DSC00884-300x225
If you are going to bill yourself as a New Generation of Independent Leadership, you totally lose credibility when your donors are Unions, Gay Groups and the Democratic Party. With ties to Acorn and Congressman Bobby Scott, proponent of continued Acorn funding, as well as the SEIU, an arm of Acorn (ACORN’s co-founder, Wade Rathke, also founded SEIU), New Generation of Independent Leadership Tom Shields is not!

Here is a partial list of Shields Donors:

Intl Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
Laborers Mid Atlantic Regional Organizing Coalition
Service Employees International Union (SEIU – Acorn Arm)
Va Education Assn
Va State AFL-CIO

Va Partisans (mobilizing Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Virginia voters)

Scott for US House of Representatives – Bobby

For a Democrat, there would be nothing particularly surprising about these donors, but for someone billing themselves as “independent”, this exposes Shields’ efforts to hide his true liberal beliefs.

Shields has called for over $600 MILLION in new spending and has no idea how to pay for it, other than put the budget on the internet.

Now, with Tom Shields refusal to repudiate Scott’s vote on Acorn looming as a major tell for his far left ideology, we see the kind of person Shields really is.

Shields campaign has been unable to attract mainstream supporters, so he has morphed his campaign into a disconnected hodgepodge of far left special interests and unions. His town hall meetings are populated with individuals that want the state to spend more money for an array of special programs of little benefit to anyone but themselves. And Shields is so desperate to attract voters at any cost, he has promised taxpayer money to everyone that asks, oblivious to the budget shortfall of $7 BILLION.

Shields may have started this campaign intending to be a New Generation of Independent Leadership, but as people realize he is nothing new, has no ideas and he lacks a fundamental understanding of Government and especially budgets, his campaign has been forced to resort to distortions and fabrications of his opponent’s record. This desperation has caused Shields to abandon the principals that he started out with and resort to underhanded tactics in an effort to smear Dr. O’Bannon.

I have watched Shields metamorphosis from an intellectually reasonable candidate into a pathetic beggar willing to compromise his beliefs and principals in a desperate attempt to win at any cost. And this is sad.

As I posted back on August 12th:

All in all, I am very encouraged to see we have two intellectuals running for the 73rd District House seat and I am delighted at the prospects for a clean and rigorous campaign based on the issues. At the end of the day, my political leanings are aligned very closely with Delegate O’Bannon, and I believe his leadership has been a shining example of top notch leadership we need in Virginia, and O’Bannon’s leadership as the only Doctor in the House makes him even more valuable.
But I can honestly say, both are honorable men and I am looking forward to a good debate.

So, my problem is with the direction the Shields campaign has taken in the last month or so. I truly believed that Tom Shields was going to be this New Generation of Independent Leader he was promising to be. While O’Bannon has always been the better choice in my opinion, I was looking forward to a vigorous race with true debate on the actual issues. That is what Shields promised.

But what has happened is Tom Shields looked me in the eye and promised a campaign on the issues, and systematically began putting out distortions and false statements on O’Bannon’s record. What happened to the New Leadership? Looks like the same old smear campaign we are seeing everywhere else.

So am I attacking Shields for no reason? Absolutely not. I am holding Shields to his word. He has demonstrated to me that he has no morals or principals and is not a man of his word. I truly had a great deal of respect for Tom personally, and he has let me down.

And I find that truly disappointing.

I call on Tom Shields and his campaign manager Tony Coppola to stop with the lies and distortions and return this campaign to what Shields told me it would be.

No more lies about Qimonda. No more lies about O’Bannon’s record. Do you honestly think a Physician would refuse treatment for a rape victim in an emergency room? Or allow a pharmacist to “confiscate” a valid prescription? This is an insult to Dr. O’Bannon’s professionalism, and is absolutely untrue.

Will you stop being dishonest and get back to telling us why you are the better candidate so voters can decide?

  1. Big businesses and social conservatives line up behind Republicans, while Unions and trial lawyers, etc. line up behind the Democrats.

Virginians increasingly call for campaign finance reform, so that outside groups have NO influence on who gets to be elected as our representatives.

We must pass legislation that restricts political donations to the same as the individual limits specified by the federal law and we must further restrict donations to be from only those who actually maintain their PRIMARY residence within the district where the person donates.

This would eliminate corporate donations, donations from lobbying groups and would promote the participation of those who actually live within the respective district.

By cutting out the corporate money and non-resident donations, fewer dollars would be involved in campaigns, promoting more candidates and allowing representatives to spend more time working with constituents, instead of fund-raising.

All honest politicians will actively support this campaign finance reform.

  3. Probably the best point made lately J.T. No one wants to shut off the valve to those contributions which is why you have people like Deeds out in CA raising money for his campaign here in Virginia. Well done.

Speaking of campaign donations, I saw O'Bannon received a donation from Micron (who was one of Qimonda's competitors). It seems a little odd that a company who has no presence in the district would donate money to O'Bannon. Perhaps it was a thank you gift for helping to shut down Qimonda?

Perhaps you are not aware that Micron was a potential buyer of the Qimonda plant that would have potentially saved many of the jobs. I know Governor Kaine was too busy raising money for Obama and attending ESPY awards to be bothered with helping salvage some of the jobs and broker a deal for Micron to purchase the Henrico plant, but perhaps Delegate O'Bannon pitched in to help save the jobs, even though Qimonda is not in his district. I don't know. What I do know is that Qimonda execs screwed around and the window of opportunity to sell to Micron closed. What that does mean is that O'Bannon obviously had some contact with Micron, which is what a Delegate should do to try to bring jobs into the area.

They have to do something to earn the massive paychecks, right? $17,500.00 per year we pay our Delegats is a lot to a Neurologist.
