The Olympians from Botswana take to the field, or in this case, the ring, tomorrow at 9 am EDT, as Oteng Oteng boxes against Puerto Rico’s Jayvier Cintron. (Puerto Rico has its own Olympic committee and team; so much for US imperialism! So does Guam, US Virgin Islands, Northern Marianas and American Samoa!) I hate like heck to root against anyone associated with USA if they are not pro athletes but I got to give Botswana the nod here because of my extensive coverage and my admiration for the nation of Botswana.
If you have cable, you may be able to go to www.nbcolympics.com and watch the bout. I will miss the live coverage but maybe the next bout – if Oteng wins against Cintron, here‘s the entire flyweight division at the Games!
Here’s some detail on Oteng: He won the African qualifying match for the Games and won bronze at the Commonwealth Games (the sporting event of the British Commonwealth of nations) but was eliminated in the second round rather decisively by the eventual world champ: MIsha Aloyan. Oteng is probably a bit of a long shot for a medal but not beyond the realm of possibility.
BY THE WAY: The reason Botswana only had four athletes was that one was a reserve and had an injury. Here’s a story where the national Olympic chairman had to apologize for misleading the public on this question. (Of course I take no opinion on this!)
