TORY MP DEFECTS to UKIP! FIRST (ACTUALLY SECOND) MP for the libertarian anti-EU party! LIBERTY is on the MARCH!

I was going to write today about climate change – how those sincerely for action on climate change could try to win people to their cause but I was interrupted by breaking news! (Reports of a victory lap in Mechanicsville are TRUE!)

The Conservative Member of Parliament for Clacton, Douglas Carswell, has switched parties to UKIP!

That’s right!  UKIP will have its first (actually second) MP for UKIP in the British Parliament.

Here is the UKIP report.  Carswell states two things:

In a massive move for the Party, Mr Carswell told a press conference in Westminster this morning that his position with the Tories had become “untenable”.

He told reporters that he thinks “many” other Tory MPs will now follow his move and join him in the UKIP ranks because the Conservative leadership was “not serious” about change in the UK’s relationship with the European Union.

I can promise you we here at the Virginia Right blog WILL have a report on who is Douglas Carswell!

The Daily Telegraph says this:

Douglas Carswell’s defection to Ukip could mark a turning point in politics

Ukip appeals not just to disaffected Tories, but to all who have lost trust in the major parties

It’s more than just disaffection with politics or events that cause political realignment in any nation but rather a new vision that is actually an old vision:  Liberty and national sovereignty.

Here’s more:

For voters who feel that Conservatives and Labour are basically the same, two faces of the same devalued coin, the warning “Vote Ukip, Get Labour” holds little fear. In that case, the Conservatives’ silver bullet will go astray and Ukip will amass enough votes and even seats to pitch not just next year’s election result but the whole party system into chaotic uncertainty. Anyone considering lending Mr Farage their support next year should be in no doubt that it could be the most consequential vote they ever cast.

Some Tea Party people feel the same.  They’ll vote say a LP over the GOP if they feel he or she is insufficiently conservative.  Now I do not always agree with that.

The BBC is reporting a by-election will now occur:

Tory Douglas Carswell has defected to UKIP and quit as MP for Clacton, saying he will contest the subsequent by-election for Nigel Farage’s party.

If he wins the support of voters he will be the first elected UK Independence Party MP in the Commons.

And their analysis by Brian Wheeler and Iain Watson

But it is Mr Carswell’s decision to call a by-election in Clacton – rather than continuing to sit in the Commons under a different party banner – that will cause the biggest headache for Mr Cameron.

The prospect of defeat is real. And if it happens, expect more Conservative MPs to call for a pact – at least informally, seat by seat – with UKIP at next year’s general election.
