Unsolicited Advice for Ted Cruz: Military Brats Born Abroad Ought to be Able to Run for President

I am a proud military brat (yes my dad worked for the PX and was a civilian but still where would the soldiers and sailors be without the PX!) and I remember a fierce conversation when I lived in Germany with another teen who insisted he could never run for President (I doubt either of us will actually run but my chances might be a bit better due to my political activism I suppose) because he was born in Germany of a solider and a German mother.  I said – you are a citizen just like I am (I was born in Jacksonville NC BTW for the record in case it becomes important) and I never did persuade him.

Now military brats stick together.  We’ve been at strange places, spoken or tried to speak strange languages and been to unusual but excellent schools abroad.  Even those brats who never left the US are proud to be a Brat!  (The military actually tried to change the word Brat and we protested!)  I got a lot of of my time abroad and at military bases – cross-cultural experiences, a different perspectibve on your nation and how exceptional it is, and a truly diverse group of fellow students.  I’ll always be a Wuerzburg Wolf as long as I am here and even when promoted to glory if the Lord lets me!

So here’s some unsolicited advice to Senator Cruz:  Take about how unfair it would be if all those military brats, sons and daughters of those who served, could never be President because they were born abroad while their parents stood in harm’s way defending their nation.  Well I am the same situation except my mother did not serve in the military but was abroad for business.  Let’s not disenfranchise these thousands, if not millions of Americans.

That ought to blunt the criticism of Trump and others.  It might also get Cruz some new supporters – remember – we brats stick together!

If all else fails, I did write an article on this very subject, published in the Florida Coastal Law Review, where I argue that the Fourteenth Amendment may have repealed the Native-Born Clause regarding the President.  The senator got a copy of that article from me personally at the Life Church event last month.

People might disagree with Cruz.  I am still for Jim Gilmore for President.  But he’s a citizen and just as eligible to be President as I am.

  1. I am continually amazed by your support for Gilmore. So much of what you write I agree with. I think you would agree that the governments has grown exponentially over the last century yet I believe you would continue to support the politicians that produce this growth. The Democrats always promote more spending and the Republicans claim they are for less spending but never govern in that way. For example the Dems want to increase spending by a 20 billion and the GOP indignately claim that is excessive and we should only spend 19 billion. Not one of the past governors has reduced spending, or cut the bureaucracy. To understand what really happens you need to work inside the government and own your own business. I have done both. Every governor who wins that position comes with the notion that he will run the government more efficiently than his predecessor. Hasn’t happened. Just what will Gilmore do that would address any of that. As far as his knowledge dealing with the international issues it isn’t impressive. He is establishment, period, and would do nothing.Since he is polling below 1% I think you might need another candidate to support.
I like much of your thinking but on this topic you are extremely naive.

    • Thanks David again for coming by and commenting in such a civil and respectful way. I would be pained to lose your respect over Jim Gilmore. I support Gilmore because first, he brings some excellent qualifications for the Presidency and it is too bad that people overlook that in laughter and derision. But Gilmore was twice elected to statewide office – one a Governor. He also has some expertise in three important areas – the Three T’s: Taxes, Technology and fighting Terrorism. I wanted to remind people of his qualifications for the Presidency. I am very undecided about the candidates (I actually liked Bobby Jindal and Scott Walker but both surprisingly dropped out – probably not because Sandy did not help them!) and I thought – wouldn’t it be neat to be in a campaign where I could perhaps make a difference – be in the inner circle. But I wasn’t asked.

Gilmore is also largely untainted by the present DC establishment and can be free from their issues. He could have run an outsider but experienced campaign. Gilmore does have foreign policy experience through the Gilmore Global Group and USA Secure. He might be a bit more of a neocon than I am comfortable with but again, I wanted to make sure Gilmore’s talents and abilities are not forgotten.

I agree that the Dems want to raise government 20% and the GOP only 19% and then they call it a savings. (And the media will call it a CUT!) But what do I do? Tell me who I should help. Defend your answer. I’ll treat that with the respect I have been treated with by you at this blog – that is a lot. I wish Ron Paul was running again. I’d help him.

Thank you again for coming by.

  2. Juris Doctored in 78 says:

John McCain was born in the US Territory known as the Panama Canal to TWO American Citizens. His father was serving in the US Military in Panama. When he was born, McCain was a natural born citizen.

Ted Cruz on the other hand was born IN CANADA to a father who was a Cuban citizen who was in the process of becoming a naturalized Canadian Citizen. Ted’s mother was born in the USA. But living and working in Canada at the time of Ted’s Birth.

Ted is a US Citizen by birth and was a Canadian Citizen by Birth. Funny he didn’t give up his Canadian Citizenship until he ran for US Senate and his father who claims to love America didn’t become a US Citizen until 2005 after living in the Good Ole USA for 33 years.

What TED CRUZ is NOT – HE IS NOT A NATURAL BORN CITIZEN- which is a requirement to run for President of the United States of America. Merely being a “citizen” doesn’t meet the high water mark set by the founders who wanted to prevent exactly what Ted and his father Rafael Cruz are trying to pull-Ted Conveniently calls himself a Citizen- that is not the requirement for POTUS.

Pick Rand Paul, Ben Carson, or Donald Trump and go read your history.
