1. VCDL looking to file an injunction against Fredericksburg for illegal gun “buy up”
*****************************************************

Fredericksburg is going to participate in a gun buy-up and plans on illegally destroying any collected guns. On top of that, Fredericksburg does not have an ordinance authorizing the buy- up as is required by the law.

Under the City’s scheme, each gun owner selects a charity from a list of four charities. A $100 donation is made to that charity by a third-party donor for each gun. The gun owner won’t actually receive that money directly, so the City is arguing that they are exempt from the law (15.2-915.5).

We disagree. That donation is being provided in lieu of the gun owner providing that $100 donation themselves.

VCDL is looking at its options for filing an injunction to stop the City from proceeding.

Here is a story on the buy-up:

2. Lobby Day: Call for team leaders!
*****************************************************

Lobby Day is fast approaching (Monday, January 19th)!

We need volunteers to lead our teams as they sit down with legislators. If you have volunteered in the past, we need your experience. If you have never led a team, but want to step up your participation, now is the time.

Team Leaders are critical to the success of Lobby Day.

Team Leaders are responsible for making appointments with the legislators (Bob Sadtler will provide you their contact information), leading a team from one assigned office to the next, providing each legislator or their aide with a copy of the VCDL Legislative Summary, politely introducing your group as a VCDL delegation, asking the legislators to support VCDL’s positions on behalf of Virginia gun owners, and steering the general discussion of the meeting. We will provide you with an after action report to fill out, to help us determine and assess important information about each legislator’s reactions and comments.

Team Leaders are NOT responsible for recruiting teams, there will be plenty of volunteers available that morning to draw from. Team Leaders are also not required to do all the talking. In fact, having different people speak on different bills can be more engaging.

If you are interested in serving as a Team Leader, contact Bob Sadtler at LobbyDay@vcdl.org. Have the names of your Senator and Delegate handy, so that Bob can assign them to your team. If you don’t know who your Senator and Delegate are, you can find them here:

3. RIP Virginia Griggs
*****************************************************

It’s with great sadness that I have to announce the passing of VCDL member Virginia Griggs, the loving wife of VCDL member and former gun show coordinator, Jerry Brunner. Those of you who have attended the Norfolk gun shows have probably seen Virginia at the VCDL booth over the years.

Virginia died on in the early morning hours of November 27th.

Jerry wrote this in an email about Virginia:

“Virginia crossed over the rainbow bridge. She was my heart and soul. She was an educator and a hard core supporter and believer in the VCDL and the Second Amendment. She will be missed by me and there will be a void in my life and in the Second Amendment groups she was a part of.”

The Virginia Citizens Defense League offers its heartfelt condolences to Jerry and his family.

4. After a year, Radford finally has its repealed gun ordinances published
*****************************************************

Thanks to VCDL EM Dave Knight for taking on the task of getting Radford to repeal a group of laws that were preempted by state law. While Radford can update their laws really quickly if they want to, it took a year for these repeals to appear online.

The municode.com website now reflects the 2013 repeal of obsolete/redundant local firearm ordinances, sections 70-35 thru 70-44, see:

REMEDY/ACTION TO BE TAKEN: STOP USING YOUR SHOTGUN. Any unintended discharge has the potential to cause injury or death.Immediately cease use of recalled shotguns and return them to Remington free of charge.
