Virginia Blog Rankings for 2-13-2011

Here are this week’s Virginia Political Blog Rankings.

Note the added column (after Trend) which shows last week’s standings vs. other Virginia Political Blogs.

Please note that the up or down trend refers to the score for each blog this week vs. last week. As such, it is a measure of how the blog did this week as opposed to the previous week in relation only to itself. The last column shows the standing in relation to the other blogs. While most that moved up a spot from last week also had an upward trend for the week, there are others that trended downward yet still improved in this week’s standing. That simply menas the trend down was less than the downward trend of closely ranked blogs.

Overall, the Most Improved Virginia Blog for the Week winners is:

Shaun Kenney +6

The Overall Standings:

And Right Leaning Blogs:

  1. Just wondering about the methodology behind the rankings. For instances, how does Va Social Conservative rank so high when there hasn’t been a new post in more than a month? How do you rank? By traffic?

Lloyd, go here http://www.varight.com/news/virginia-political-blog-rankings-for-sunday-192011/ for a bit of an explanation.

This is more or less a RealClearPolitics type of rolling average. As such, it looks at longer term trends. In addition, the ranking engines use complex algorithms and measure things way beyond my ability to measure. For an idea of what goes into these metrics, look here http://www.compete.com/help/s2

There are some blogs that have not had a new post in a year, but they are still linked by a number of sites, which appears to slow the ranking decay of a relatively dormant blog.

Traffic plays a part, but the Compete link should give you an idea of what is taken into account. The other data I use for the average uses similar methods.

I only have data back to last month. As I gather more, I will be able to better answer a question like that. Right now, I can say that in the 6 weekly snapshots I have, Va Social Conservative has dropped 5 of the 6 weeks. And in total ranking against ALL sites (not just Blogs, or Va blogs), they have fallen 100,175 spots in world ranking.

As I collect data, and have the spare time, I hope to create the ability to look at this type of data and graphs by clicking on the name.

But, apparently, by not posting, the blog is trending down.

  2. Very interesting. Thanks, Tom! I look forward to future iterations
