For the last couple of years, Virginia’s Senate Democrats ignored the rules of the Senate to kill bills in a subcommittee. Despite rulings to the contrary, the Democrats refused to even bring bills up before the full committee and allowed a couple of radical left wing Senators to be the final authority on the fate of a bill.
Now, suddenly, the Democrats want to cry about the rules of the Senate – specifically the rule that allows the President of the Senate – in this case Republican Lt. Governor Bill Bolling – to decide all ties.
Somehow they now believe that setting up committees is exempt from the tie breaking vote rule.
The last time there was a 20-20 split, the show was on the other foot and the tie breaker belonged to the Democrats. And they were prepared to go forward and allow the Democrat to break all ties then.
But now, when they are on the losing end of the equation, they want to backtrack.
The only reason that the Democrats were not able to take control was a single Democrat, Virgin Goode, (who later became a Republican) demanded the Democrats share power.
Absent such a magnanimous gesture from a Republican – one who most likely had an important bill killed by the Democrats in direct violation of the Senate rules – the Democrats have turned to the courts. Perhaps if the Democrats had been less nasty during the last session there would be one Republican that would find them worthy of sharing power. But when you misbehave as the Democrats have, there is no good will in the fellowship bank to be had.
How odd it is that the Democratic members of the Legislative Branch have seen fit to violate the separation of powers and ask a court – the judicial branch – to hear their sour grapes case.
And if they lose, look for the left wing whiners to leave the state like their cowardly cousins did in Wisconsin, bringing shame and ridicule to the Virginia Senate.
Donald McEachin is the ringleader of this circus. He needs to crawl back under his rock and accept that they lost! I guess he’s another one of those liberal raised kids that get used to “everyone gets a T-Ball Trophy” mentality.
Donald – no trophy for you.
Here is the take on this from the Republican Party of Virginia:
The Sore Loser Files Suit
— Democrat heads to court in hopes of overturning 57%-41% loss in Senate vote —
The voters have spoken, but Donald McEachin doesn’t seem to be listening.
Despite a 200,000 vote drubbing on Election Day, Senator McEachin has has filed suit hoping to overturn the will of the voters and hold onto Democrats’ last remaining scraps of power in Richmond – Senate committee assignments.
“… The GOP has rightly claimed the mantle of leadership thanks to Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling’s tie-breaking vote...
Statement of RPV Chairman Pat Mullins:
The fact that Sen. Donald McEachin is the only Senator suing is quite telling. Senator McEachin’s desire to become Congressman McEachin is the most poorly kept secret in Richmond. He and his fellow Democrats have hamstrung the General Assembly’s Congressional redistricting efforts for months, holding out hope that he will be able to move Virginia’s 4th District seat to include his home.
