Did I go back in the WABAC machine? Where’s Peabody and Mr. Sherman to help me? I was in college at Wright State and I debated the student government chairman on the ERA in 1978 or 1979! I quoted good people like Prof. Freund and Eagle Forum to show the ERA would cause women to be drafted and fight in combat and could cause gay marriage. It also is a new Federal power grab. And is unnecessary, the Fourteenth Amendment seems to do what is necessary to allow equal pay, non-discrimination etc. Many supported the ERA for symbolic reasons and we do not ratify the Constitution for symbolic reasons.
The full Senate has not considered ERA ratification since 1980, when it died on the floor after one senator abstained on the grounds that having a wife and daughters made him lack objectivity.
Take me away, Peabody!
The same unfair craziness that accompanied the initial seven year expiration date was used again to justify this vote:
A time-limit imposed by Congress for ratifying the amendment has since expired. But Sen. Patsy Ticer (D-Alexandria), the bill’s sponsor, explained to colleagues that an attorney general’s ruling in the 1990s indicated that the amendment can still be ratified by states because such a clause can be disregarded by Congress if it was not a part of the original proposed constitutional amendment.
So the ERA supporters get all the time in the world to pass this amendment and the rescissions of four states don’t count! This is an unfair way to pass an amendment to the Constitution. I bet AG Cuccinelli will agree with the opinion of the legislative services in Nevada that the ERA is dead and must be re-ratified again in the proper manner. But, again, the ERA supporters are being sneaky and underhanded. It’s a power grab and they know it.
The resolution got the vote of every Democrat (and two Republicans who need education apparently! Here they are: Senators Stosch and Blevins – let them know if they are in your district that you do not want radical social engineering and a Federal power grab!)
Thankfully, the House of Delegates said no!
What can I do? Get informed – go to this site for info: Eagle Forum stop ERA site Since two of our Hanover Senators voted yes for this monstrosity, the GOP committee here in Hanover should pass a resolution opposing the ERA. Bring it up in your Tea Party meeting! Get a friendly delegate or senator to ask the Attorney General to say the ERA is dead. They will be back – so we need a new Virginia Senate! FLIP THE SENATE in 2011!
