Virginias Electoral Process Is Broken

Virginia’s Electoral Process is broken.

The integrity and sanctity of Virginia’s electoral process is broken and we want to see it fixed.

The right of every legal citizen to vote is the cornerstone of our constitutional republic and if people lose faith that elections are fair or the results are being manipulated, then the legitimacy of the entire government is in question.

The court has ruled twice against the VA Board of Elections for failing to mail ballots to 2,000 of our fellow Virginians serving in the military overseas with ample time for them to vote in  2008.

They were simply left out of the process, either through negligence and mismanagement or intentionally, we don’t know which.

Many of these same military have been charged with the mission of promoting the concept of representative democracy in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, yet they don’t get to vote in their own republics elections?  That’s simply outrageous.

We called the Virginia Board of Elections last week and asked if the ballots were mailed on time, in compliance with the newly enacted state law passed this year, requiring them to be mailed 45 days before the election and I was assured that they were.

Someone in the know called me after I reiterated that on Doc Thompson’s show on Friday and informed me that they had NOT been mailed on time in more than 10% of the local election boards and he pointed me to this link.

Then it turns out that several felons, the number is unclear at this point,  MAY HAVE vote in that same election.  I don’t want my legal vote to be cancelled out by an illegal vote. That’s simply unfair and these people must be prosecuted.  Each of those illegal votes constitutes 4 separate felonies, according to one Commonwealth’s  Attorney I spoke with recently.

We were informed on Friday that there is now a statewide investigation by the Virginia State Police into voter fraud concerning felons voting.  That’s a good start.

So  we’re going to Protest the Virginia Board of Election on Wed., October 28th from 4-7PM in front of the Virginia Board of Elections, 1100 Bank St. across from the State Capitol Building.

We demand free and honest elections in Virginia!  We demand transparency and accountability!

This is a nonpartisan issue that both Democrats and Republicans should get behind if they value the integrity of the electoral process.

We want to bring more attention to all of the issues in question and we demand that there be some accountability.

Secondly… We simply want it FIXED before the 2010 elections, no excuses.

Apparently there is culpability not only at the State Board of Elections but also with the local Registrars.  We would like to see Governor Kaine, or the next Governor,  commission an investigation into both of these issues, the military ballots and the felonious ballots, at all levels with the purpose of determining where the breakdowns are occurring, whether its because of flawed processes or if there was intentional illegal and purposeful disenfranchisement on anyone’s part and if so, they must be brought to justice and potentially TERMINATED and Prosecuted.

We Virginians take our vote very seriously and a clear message needs to be sent that we simply won’t stand for people manipulating or mishandling our voting system and the consequences of doing so will be severe.

We also need to reexamine the whole process of the purging of voter roles for both the felons and the deceased.  We simply have no idea how LARGE this problem is.  The process now involves the Virginia State Police providing the list of felons to the VBE, who then forwards it on to each local electoral board and it is up to them to execute the deletion.  I’m not sure this process works and we don’t know about the process for the deceased.

All we want are free and honest elections.  This is not a controversial issue.
