The Scots better watch out: They might get hit by a kitchen sink today.
If the Unionists did not throw the kitchen sink at the YES SCOTLAND drive for independence it was only because they forgot it! Here thanks to ConservativeHome email alert today are the terrible things that will or could happen if the Scots vote YEA:
- Less may be spent on the NHS – The Independent
- Prices will rise (warn Asda, Next and John Lewis) – Daily Express
- RBS, Lloyds, Clydesdale Bank, TSB Bank and Tesco Bank may relocate south – Financial Times
- Higher taxes and lower spending will be needed to help build up reserves – Financial Times
- There may be no Olympics team – Daily Mail
- The Licence Fee could double… – The Guardian
- …And the IFS warns of market turbulence – Financial Times
Let’s think about these items – less may be spent on the NHS if Scotland becomes independent? COME AGAIN? If Scotland is independent they can spend as much as they want to on the NHS or they could even do the right thing and privatize the thing.
Let’s turn to prices will rise: There may be initial price rises but by the time independence actually comes, there will be stability again.
The banks will leave Scotland: They have to because they need a central bank to ensure their deposits. see this comment at Forbes:
But a newly independent Scotland wouldn’t have a central bank. It also wouldn’t have its own currency: they’re expecting to continue to use the pound sterling which is run by the Bank of England down in London. This means that if there was a run on a Scottish bank the Scottish government simply wouldn’t have the ability to bail them out. Because it wouldn’t control the printing presses to be able to create the necessary money.
Sounds like Ron Paul to me! (I am sure neither an apology nor credit will be given to the former congressman and libertarian icon for his views!) The simple solution to me: Make the Royal Bank of Scotland the central bank!
The other items are all items that can and will be negotiated by the two sides. The 2016 Olympics and maybe 2018 too could be similar to the Unified Team in 1992 and 1994 or the IOC could admit the Scottish team on its own merits.
So watch out for the kitchen sink today! Just ask yourself, people of Scotland, the following: WWWWD? (What Would William Wallace Do?)
And remember: They can take away your BBC but they’ll never take your freedom – unless you vote NO next Thursday!

It is awful that 250,000 Virginians might lose their health coverage; they have to consider that elections have consequences. Thanks Steve for coming by.
