WHAT HAPPENED AT THE OSCARS and A PROPOSAL FOR THE ACADEMY

I usually do not watch the Academy Awards or other award shows because someone stands up and blames George W. Bush or America for the world’s woes or praises Al Gore for his work on global warming or uses bad language.  Why have that temptation to anger?  But Sunday’s show was astounding; I almost wished I had watched it.  Consider this:

A movie that honored our soldiers in Iraq (The Hurt Locker) won six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director (A woman for the first time).  A movie that was intended to be critical of the US as imperialistic won only three technical awards.  A openly Christian movie was nominated for Best Picture (The Blind Side) and the actress in it (Sandra Bullock) won for Best Actress.  She even thanked her parents for not allowing her to car date until she was 18!  And the winning director, Kathryn Bigelow of The Hurt Locker actually said this in accepting her award:

”I would not be standing here if it wasn’t for Mark Boal, who risked his life for the words on the page,” says Kathryn Bigelow receiving the Oscar for Best Director for The Hurt Locker, “and wrote such a courageous screenplay that I was fortunate enough to have an extraordinary cast bring that screenplay to life. I’d just like to dedicate this to the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world. And may they come home safe.”

I know; it’s amazing, isn’t it!

There is one more thing the Academy should do.  I am sure it would have been done long ago under other circumstances (e.g., a liberal) if an actor, SAG member, SAG President, and presumably Academy member who after his acting days were over, rose to the highest office in the land – not in a movie but was elected President.  I of course speak of Ronald Wilson Reagan.  He should be given a special posthumous Oscar for his work and the honor he brought to his profession.
