Twenty years ago, the terrible evil empire called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was thank God about to breathe its last. But before that blessed ending, we had the scary coup attempt of August 19-21, 1991. Where were you? Some of my readers might not even remember on the basis of youth (don’t rub it in!). Here is an interesting Russian take on the failed coup – what if it had succeeded? I know what I was doing and thinking since a dear friend of mine and colleague in Christ, Timothy Rigney, was murdered a few days before in a robbery. I had to also speak (one of several who gave an eulogy) at the funeral on Wednesday August 21 (I was greatly honored to be asked by the family!) Tim Rigney was a wonderful person. I miss him.
Three new nations – they really aren’t new – Latvia, Lithuania (who had declared independence in 1990) and Estonia were able to finally secure sovereignty from the Evil Empire. Estonia re-declared independence twenty years ago today – August 20, 1991. They are doing well with a largely free-market economy and government. Latvia declared independence on May 4, 1990 and reclaimed it on August 21. They were quickly recognized by many nations, starting with Iceland and the northern European nations. The USA recognized independence in September.
The coup was scary but the standing up of the Russian people hastened its end. (It is thankful that there was few who sought bloodshed.) Gorbachev had to watch as Yeltsin signed a decree banning the Russian Communist Party. Communism is finished as a serious ideology, thank God! Let’s celebrate today by remembering how precious liberty and sovereignty are and maybe even going to this site – the Ron Paul Birthday Moneybomb and giving something. (It already is at $320k this am!) Tell them you are thankful that freedom came to the former Soviet Union (admittedly not all the nations emerging from the former USSR have been good stewards fo the freedom they received!).
