I was researching this question when I found this at the Southern Poverty Law Center HATEWATCH:
News of the Alabama passage heartened anti-ICLEI activists across the nation. The headline on one Virginia blog, for example, reads: “VICTORY! ICLEI BAN PASSED ALABAMA LEGISLATURE! YEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Read it and weep, globalists!”
The HATEWATCH was surely trying to protect its readers from my article so I cite it here for them to read!
I grow weary of trying to educate the globalists sometimes, even when they disguise their pro-globalist ideology as poverty law. I know something about poverty law: I was Virginia’s first Appellate Defender and I fought last year and will (Lord willing!) fight this General Assembly session for its restoration! (I have even met Morris Dees many years ago as a law student at the Capstone and even wrote my beau ideal a legal memo on why a state kindergarten lottery was unconstitutional!) I also worked nearly seven years for Larry Framme answering calls for Pre-Paid (Now LegalShield) members , many of whom could certainly use a poverty lawyer! I got mentioned in this stockholders’ letter! (I also supported the gay judge! Take that Southern Poverty Law Center!)
So, the SPLC blogger asks this question:
The Alabama cities of Birmingham and Huntsville are both ICLEI members (though depending on how this law is interpreted, they may not be for long). As their residents gear up for another long, hot Deep South summer, they – and the rest of us Alabamians – can breathe a sigh of relief, safe in the knowledge that the communist menace of environmental protection has been beaten back from our doors.
First, what is ambiguous about this language (considering that ICLEI admits it implements of Agenda 21):
“…the State of Alabama and all political subdivisions may not enter into any agreement…from or to…intergovernmental organizations as defined in Agenda 21…”
I think Huntsville and Birmingham must get out of ICLEI!
The blogger, Leah Nelson, also blogged this article on Salon (This is great – my article was quoted at Salon!) and also at AlterNet, too. So, I plan to comment at both places with the link! Let’s see if we can educate a few progressive readers! It will certainly do more than her screed against Agenda 21 that mainly blames the evil John Birch Society:
Since September, the JBS has sponsored a national lecture tour on the supposed dangers of Agenda 21. Using slideshows replete with images of Karl Marx and Alger Hiss, the accused communist spy who helped draft the U.N. Charter, JBS scare-mongers have fanned out across the country to warn locals of the evils of the U.N.’s sustainability initiative. Agenda 21, they claim, calls for “a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced.” According to the JBS, the ultimate purpose of this decades-old plan is nothing less than a new world order in which rural regions will be depopulated and foreign bureaucrats will mandate family size here in the United States, imposing forced abortions as they do in communist China.
Apparently, these threats were enough to spook the Republican National Committee, which in January passed a resolution opposing Agenda 21, decrying the nonbinding measure as “a comprehensive plan of extreme environmentalism, social engineering, and global political control.” Counties in various states have adopted similar resolutions, as has the Tennessee House of Representatives. According to The New American, activists in New Hampshire are lobbying to pass anti-Agenda 21 legislation. Arizona’s state Senate this spring passed a bill similar to Alabama’s, but it died before the session ended.
Now I wouldn’t have mentioned Alger Hiss if I were Nelson! Hiss is in fact a communist agent and also was the FIRST Temporary Secretary General of the UN! I think ICLEI uses unproven human global warming as a bludgeon to take away liberty and national sovereignty. Hence, I am against it. I am also against US answering to foreign committees under multilateral treaties or trade pacts and US being unfairly treated by UN officials! I am for the Constitution as the Supreme Law of the Land (next to the Bible most dear!) as that is the source of the rights heroes like Thurgood Marshall sought to end racial segregation!
Finally, it was not the John Birch Society that rallied the forces against ICLEI and Agenda 21! I would contend it was the Vote Heard ‘Round the World: The vote of the Carroll County (MD) Commissioners to get out of ICLEI and abolish the Sustainability Office in January 2011. Before that, they laughed at the brave, intrepid activist who dared oppose ICLEI. Today, even the Republican National Committee has said – NO Agenda 21! (We need a documentary about this – maybe when a liberty President gives the five Carroll County Commissioners their well-deserved Presidential Medal of Freedom.)
It’s time for the local governments in Huntsville and Birmingham to obey the law: Get out of ICLEI. They got until July 31 to do it.
UPDATE: It is now September 14 and I have sent emails to both Huntsville and Birmingham to see if they are still members!
