Granted Neil Hamilton is a UKIP leader (his title is Deputy Chairman and he was a Conservative MP) but his thoughts on political realignment are telling.  It is worth reading.  Let’s start with the change in voting patterns:

Towns such as Rotherham and Grimsby are now prime targets. In May’s Euro elections Ukip even topped the poll in Merthyr Tydfil and scored 42 per cent in Hartlepool, the places where Labour traditionally weighed rather than counted their votes.

These results are not flashes in the pan. It takes a long time for people to change the voting habits of many years but once they have made the break they do not easily return to the former fold.

People do not easily change voting patterns.  Now let’s try the discovery of the Farage Labourite!  (I am still looking about for another pundit using the term which I took from Reagan Democrat!  None yet!)  Hamilton describes this too:

Ukip emphasises that the working class has suffered most from Labour’s open-door immigration policy. Five million immigrants since 1997 have driven down wages at the bottom of the pile, pushed up rents and put huge pressure on schools and the NHS. Benefits sent abroad by immigrant workers mean less cash available for hard-luck cases at home.

Hamilton cites the Climate Change Act of 2008, which a Labour government passed.  It ought to be placed around the neck of every Labour MP hopeful in May.  It means nothing less than keeping the lights on in every British home.  Now there is an interesting article on the Tory MP, Owen Paterson,  who now that UKIP is winning and tectonically changing British politics, wants the Coalition government to scrap the Climate Change Act!

He will argue that the 2008 Climate Change Act, which ties Britain into stringent targets to reduce the use of fossil fuels, should be suspended until other countries agree to take similar measures. If they refuse, the legislation should be scrapped altogether, he will say.

He will also suggest that home owners should get used to temporary power cuts — cutting the electricity to appliances such as fridges for two hours at a time, for example — to conserve energy.

In his speech, on Wednesday night, Mr Paterson will state that, without changes in its current policy, large-scale power cuts will plunge homes across the country into darkness.

“Blind adhesion to the 2050 targets will not reduce emissions and will fail to keep the lights on,” he will say. “The current energy policy is a slave to flawed climate action.

Paterson is proving the British version of Tom White’s aphorism that is cited “above the fold” here at the Virginia Right blog:

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.

Paterson was the Coalition’s Environment Minister!  Until he was sacked!

The speech will be Mr Paterson’s first significant intervention in the green energy debate since he was sacked as environment secretary during this summer’s Cabinet reshuffle.

Yes that’s right!  Nothing like a sacked Minister of the Government to see the light!  Of course the LibDems would never approve of any sort of legislation like this and here’s the proof:

However, his intervention was dismissed last night by Edward Davey, the Liberal Democrat Energy and Climate Change Secretary.

Mr Davey said: “Ripping up the Climate Change Act would be one of the most stupid economic decisions imaginable.

“The overwhelming majority of scientists agree that climate change exists while most leading British businesses and City investment funds agree with the Coalition that taking out an ‘insurance policy’ now will protect the UK against astronomical future costs caused by a changing climate.

“The majority of European countries are ready to implement proposals that would see [them] adopt targets similar to our Climate Change Act in a deal the Prime Minister should seal later this month.

“With the USA, China and India also now taking the climate change threat seriously, the global marketplace for green technology is increasingly strong.”

But the British people have a choice now.  There is a non-racist libertarian sovereignty alternative to Tweedledee and Tweedledum:  The United Kingdom Independence Party.  This scares the Dee and Dum parties.  They will throw the kitchen sink at the people to scare them out of voting UKIP.

Ukip is breaking the mould of politics. It is an insurgency of outsiders connecting with millions who have never voted or gave up on the old parties long ago, the 40 per cent who didn’t bother to vote in 2010. It is the main challenger to Labour in the north and the Tories in the south. Clacton and Heywood are just the latest harbingers of a sea-change that became evident at Eastleigh in February 2013.Now the old left-rightcentre political spectrum is largely redundant. Millions see no substantial difference between Clegg, Cameron and Miliband. They are members of a professional political class and have more in common with each other than the voters they supposedly represent.

We must be strong and en courage one another – and keep speaking to those that are winnable!

Listen to Hamilton:

If in May’s general election Ukip replicates its success in Heywood, Labour will never govern independently again. Over great swathes of the country last Thursday’s message is “Vote Tory, get Labour”. Vote Ukip and you can get Ukip.

Let me stick my neck out and say:  At the rate UKIP’s going they may find themselves the overwhelming winner of the 2015 General Election next May.  And remember, it was in 1979, in the depths of the Cold War and when there was a serious question about if we would survive communism that Margaret Roberts Thatcher was elected Prime Minister.  And Thank God she was elected!
