Building Mosques and Burning Korans

When religions clash, nothing good ever happens. There is no doubt that American freedom allows both the building of the Ground Zero Mosque and the burning of the Koran, but these are both horrible ideas if unity and understanding is the goal.

I am of the opinion that the Koran burning is no more than a push back at the builders and supporters of the Ground Zero Mosque. Without the push at Ground Zero, it is doubtful that burning a Koran would have been contemplated by the “Dove World Outreach Center” and its pastor, Terry Jones.

Both groups have a constitutional right to do what they are planning to do. But both stir controversy and hatred. Fortunately, those opposed to the Mosque are mostly peaceful, but, unfortunately, those opposed to the burning of the Korans have already been quite violent. Violent to the point our government has spoken against the burning for feat of reprisals against American soldiers, and in spite of the constitutional right to burn the Korans.

That the Obama Administration would support the Mosque, despite the raw nerves still exposed from the 9/11 terrorist event, yet speak against the Koran burning is quite disturbing. But the only reason the government gives for being against the burning is the potential violence, not the apprehensive nature of burning a Holy book.

The message from Obama and the left is, as long as a group does not resort to violence, it is fine allow transgressions against them as long as the transgressions are constitutional. Yet, a transgression against a group prone to violence is to be avoided.

Unfortunately, this sends two messages, both of them very wrong. First, if you are prepared to strike out with violence, you will be supported by the government. Second, if you are not going to resort to violence, the government is prepared to brush your concerns aside.

This reinforces the message that violence is the solution to get your way. If you are prepared to burn and loot, you can expect to be placated. If not, you do not matter.

Our government should not be in the business of supporting one religion (which happens to be the violent one) over another for the simple reason that they are peaceful.

This will only convince the peaceful groups that violence is the answer. And that is not something anyone wishes to see.

The “in your face” attitude by the Koran Burners and the Ground Zero Mosque supporters is unfortunate and both of these incidents drive a wedge between people of faith for absolutely no good reason.
