GOP CHAIR STEELE COMES AROUND TO RON PAUL’S POSITION ON AFGHANISTAN!

Remember 2007 and early 2008 when most of the conservative pundits were laughing at Ron Paul because of the war?  I had to re-hear the post-debate comments with Sean Hannity, Duncan Hunter, Carl Cameron and finally Michael Steele (at that time GOPAC Chairman) just to make sure my memory was right.  Steele said that based on the mini-debate between Paul and Guiliani that there is a “…clear separation between those who should be in this campaign and those who shouldn’t…” a clear reference to Congressman Paul and his non-interventionist views.

It is amusing to see more and more conservatives and Republicans turn to Paul’s non-interventionist position.  One of the newest is now GOP Chariman Michael Steele.  Here’s what he said in a private fundraiser in Connecticut (see cbsnews.com):

In the video, he can be heard suggesting that President Obama failed to understand that waging war in Afghanistan has been shown throughout history to be a losing proposition. Steele also suggests America should have a “background” role in the country, “sort of shaping the changes that were necessary in Afghanistan as opposed to directly engaging troops.”

“Well if he’s such a student of history, has he not understood that, you know, that’s the one thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan,” Steele says of the president. “Alright? Because everyone who has tried over a thousand years of history has failed. And there are reasons for that. There are other ways to engage in Afghanistan without committing more troops.”

There is already one callfor Steele’s resignation and from a predicable source:  William Kristol at Human Events.  Kristol commented that the leader of the Republican Party should not call for withdrawal from Afghanistan.  A Democratic Party spokesperson stated that the United States were in Afghanistan because of 9/11:

Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse said in a blistering statement that “John McCain and Lindsey Graham will be interested to hear that the Republican Party position is that we should walk away from the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban without finishing the job.”

“They’d also be interested to hear that the Chairman of the Republican Party thinks we have no business in Afghanistan notwithstanding the fact that we are there because we were attacked by terrorists on 9-11,” he continued. “And, the American people will be interested to hear that the leader of the Republican Party thinks recent events related to the war are ‘comical’ and that he is betting against our troops and rooting for failure in Afghanistan. It’s simply unconscionable that Michael Steele would undermine the morale of our troops when what they need is our support and encouragement. Michael Steele would do well to remember that we are not in Afghanistan by our own choosing, that we were attacked and that his words have consequences.”

We may have invaded Afghanistan because of 9/11 but that is not why we are still there.  We do not need to remain.  Keep a small base and commando units to target Al-Qaeda and bin Laden but otherwise leave the nation-building to themselves.

I don’t expect an apology to Cong. Paul but maybe Chairman Steele will endorse Paul in 2012!

  1. Paul is still nuts on this particular facet. While I agree with many of his positions on fiscal matters, I have always sneered when he gets to foriegn policy….and I’m a huge proponnt of keeping the man far away from our Nation’s policy oninteracting with the rest of the globe. Just because you don’t see them conspiring against you (because you rolled the carpets up and stuck your head in the sand), doesn’t mean they aren’t still conspiring.
We need to look out on the world’s positions and interact with every nation that will interact with us. Spend more time reading the Monroe Doctrine. It’s high time to pull it out and dust it off for perusal, again.

From what I know about Paul on Afghanistan, (Sandy is the expert and author of this post), he wants to hit them hard, and leave. Not Nation build, which always screws us up.

I called on the US to pull out of Afghanistan months ago based on the fact that Obama is not capable of doing anything more than getting our people killed. His priorities are so screwed up, we just need to go.

If they start up again, hit them with some bombs – LOTS – and then leave again. If they hit us, return the favor 1000 fold. Then leave. Who cares if a dictatorship comes to power. Once they understand we will make things so horrible for them, they will leave us alone.

We don’t need boots on the ground. Just bombs from the sky. Fire with fire – only we have more firepower.

  3. Nice to see the Chairman finally come around but too bad he did not listen to us when we wrote him in 2008. We warned him that by choosing McCain over Ron Paul that Obama would win. Ron Paul was the ONLY candidate that could have beaten Obama.

People that this Ron Paul would cower to other countries absolutely have no idea what Dr. Paul’s foreign policy would be. If Congress had the balls to Declare War a President Paul would attack with Total and All Out War not these Police Actions that have been occurring since WWII.
