Governors Medicaid Expansion: Mission Impossible

Whats on the table? 400,000 Virginians registered to Medicare.

The cost? The federal government will subsidize the costs for three years and then Virginia is on the hook for the rest. We’ve already seen just how poorly Virginia is handling current Medicare registrations. Why would we expect 400,000 new registrations to work better than 40,000?

Want to get an idea of the real costs to Virginia, starting in 2017? Governor McAuliffe “has predicted that the consequences of turning down roughly $5 million in federal funds a day associated with expanded Medicaid eligibility” (source). That’s $1,825,000,000 a year! Where do you think McAuliffe is going to get nearly 2 billion a year in order to fund these programs after the federal government stops subsidizing them? Increased taxes. I guarantee that if Virginia signs on to this insane proposal, that within four years we will see increases to our state income tax, our property tax, our sales tax, and our newly convoluted gas tax.

Virginia is already spending $12,600,000,000 on Health Care every year. That’s over 17% of our budget. Soon it will exceed 25% of our budget. What do you think will happen when conservatives and constitutionalists finally get hold over the federal budget? The Northern Virginia gravy train isn’t going to last forever folks, as depressing as that may seem. Our gross GDP calculated at over 467 billion dollars will start to shrink. We are too dependent on the federal government for our total economy in Virginia; and any responsible local government would take that into account. Adding to our fiscal liability at this time should be flat out rejected by the Republican Party in Virginia; and so far it appears our local GOP is holding strong. For now. Until McAuliffe figures out a way to buy a handful of votes and turn the tables. If we don’t keep the pressure on, I assure you, that is exactly what will happen.
