Because “Better Off” is not a goal!
Candidate Barack Obama said he wanted to fundamentally change America. He wants “America the fair” where everyone is entitled, not to equal opportunity, but to equal outcomes.
And on paper, it sounds pretty intriguing.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
The problem is, Obama, as is the case with most Marxists, wants to be the one to determine your ability and define your needs. And take note that Obama’s Marxist mantra uses the word needs, not desires (or wants).
No one needs luxuries. No one needs anything extra.
And in the great society of equalization, where everyone gets just what they need, you will not need a good education. Why bother if there is no opportunity to rise above your station in life? Why spend the time, effort and money to educate yourself for the same pay as everyone else? What is the point?
We are not yet the American Marxist state that Obama envisions, but we are well on the way.
As Obama wages war on prosperity, prosperity wains. Businesses and individuals have no incentive to work hard and rise above the crowd. Obama will tax you back into mediocrity.
In Obama’s America, the first half of the equation: from each according to his ability, is a lofty goal, but when the rewards for those with greater abilities are simply the basic things one needs to subsist, there is no longer any incentive to be anything more than mediocre.
And while we, as a nation, are not yet living in this Obama-topia, we can see where we are headed.
What sense does it make to bother with college? And the debt you will incur? Already there are millions of highly educated young people unable to find jobs. Their education is essentially worthless, yet the debt is real. They gambled tens of thousands of dollars and lost their money. And they borrowed the money to begin with.
And if Obama wins a second term and we continue down the path he has chosen for us, the ultimate goal is for each of us to be carbon copy clones of one another warehoused in little boxes, mousetraps of perpetual mediocrity.
There will be no call for innovation and creativity. No reward for inventions or curing disease.
Capitalism and Free Markets and the possibility of great rewards built the Humvee. Marxism and Socialism built the Yugo.
In Obama’s vision of America professional athletes will make the same standard wage as an office clerk. The clerk required very little training and only pushes paper. Why would an athlete want to train for thousands of hours only to be the same as a paper pusher? Would a scientist even bother to discover a cure for … anything?
What would be the attraction of fame if there is no fortune to accompany it?
Obama wants us to all be equal. America will finally be fair when he is done. We will all get what we need and nothing more. There will be no wealthy people (except Obama) and no poor.
And there will be no incentive to create, innovate, excel, discover, learn or even try. We will be relegated to a life of simply going through the motions. We will not live, we will merely exist.
In an Obama-topia there will be no Lottery. Because there would be no rewards. We don’t need rewards. In Obama’s ideal America, the most a $1 lottery ticked could win is $1.
People would no more want to play Obama’s Lottery than they would want to live in his “fair” society.
Humans may not need anything beyond basic food and shelter to survive. But we need at least the hope and opportunity of great rewards to really live. Most of us may never be wealthy but none of us are precluded from great success and wealth.
In Obama’s world, success is a bad thing. And without the possibility of great rewards, people will not take great risk. In Obama’s world we are all doomed to a life of cookie-cutter sameness. Just going through the motions instead of living.
That’s not what America is supposed to be about. And sameness is not what makes us great.
The best case scenario, if Obama succeeds, is a life without joy or hope. A life where you will never ask the question “Are you better off now than 4 years ago” because Obama’s desired outcome to be exactly the same. This year, next year and forever. There will be no hope that our children will have a better life than we did. The goal is for them to be exactly the same. They will not need anything more than our generation. Nor will their children and their children’s children.
To each according to their needs.
We would merely exist, not live.
And America would be nothing to brag about.
