INGRESS: The Future of High Tech Mobile Gaming (A Review)

As Liberty and Constitutional Republicanism fail around us, I find myself looking around for something new and exciting, something that captures my amazement and imagination. Google, using its Google Map Technology has invented a new type of real-time real-world gaming system. Using known landmarks, historical sites, along with religious, state, and federal sites, Google has created a fictional portal system. Portals can be captured, armed, and fortified using your Andriod (and now IOS) Smart Phones.

INGRESS

The Premise of the game begins with the appearance of “Exotic Matter”. Exotic Matter has some sort of extra-natural effect on human consciousness. When you download the App on your phone, you will be asked to choose whether you wish to fight for the Enlightened, who seek to use exotic matter to “evolve” and change Mans’ consciousness, or for the Resistance, who seek to prevent such change. Chances are there are portals right outside of where you work and down the street from where you live. You go to walk your dog, you can pull out your phone and destroy your enemies claim over nearby portals, establish it for yourself, set up defenses, and link to nearby energy sources.

There are no computers interfering with the game. It’s just people, moving around in the real world, sometimes working and strategizing together to accomplish goals during otherwise busy schedules.

On my way home from work, I stopped at several portals, which were actually historical signs on the side of the road. I had no idea how close I lived to the history of John Wilkes Booth, nor how many of the fields I’ve driven by were highly advantageous avenues for strategic troop movements during the civil war. I didn’t realize how old many of our local churches actually were, or what kinds of history took place there. I have found myself fascinated by the technology, educated by the history, and amused by the fantasy of it all.

I know that Technology and Gaming are not typical subjects of a Virginia Right article, but I have discovered quite a lot about Virginia over the last two days through the discovery of an interesting, free, and readily available piece of technology.

Editor’s Note: Ingress can be found in the Google Play Store and is now available for the iOS in the Apple Store. Also, the Niantic Project is here and here.

And yet I have a Technology Category. Lol. I am a techie and a geek and do tech reviews on things now and then. I am going to have to try Ingress.

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.
