NEW DEFINITION OF CONSERVATIVE by Bob Shannon

This post was written by Bob Shannon of King William, Va.

When  John  Taylor  of  Virginia  Policy  Institute  spoke  at  our  meeting  in  March  he  explained   how  the  word  “Conservative”  had  been  redefined .

Today’s  “conservative”  believes   if  government  is  kept  in  check  at  current  levels  the  goal  of  that  philosophy  has  been  met.  Fueling  that  is  beneficiaries  of  the  status  quo  who  are  okay  with   government  at  current  levels  so  long  as  their  program  isn’t  cut . It  aid’s  elected  officials  then  in  the  public  perception  that  they  themselves  are “conservative”  if  they  hold    spending  where  it  currently  is. Nothing  puzzles  or  frustrates  conservatives  more  than  this  distortion  that  has  taken  place. Government  is  too  big,   spending  is  unsustainable  and  the  convenient  ignoring  of  those  facts  won’t  suffice  for  much  longer.

If  we  are  to  get  out  of  this  everyone  in  this  Country  will have  to  make   serious  sacrifices. The  current  tax  code  will  have  to  be  scrapped,  taking  away   advantages  many  enjoy  at  the  moment.  Everyone, including  Seniors  will  have  to  pay  for  more  of  their  first  dollar  out  of  pocket  medical  expenses.  The  notion  of  taxing  the  rich  needs  to be erased  as  a  remedy.  Ask  California  how  well  that  has  worked  out.  Citizens  who  think  someone  else  should  subsidize  their  bad  choices  must  grow  up and  elected  officials  must  begin  to  tell  the  truth  regarding  just  how  dire  our  finances  are.

Here  in  King  William  the  Board Of Supervisors  has  bought  into this  philosophy  and  new  definition  of  just  keeping  government  at  current  levels  with  the  “ level  funding”  concept.  Spending  cuts  should  be  made,  beyond  the  token  ones  that  were.  Certain programs  should  be  eliminated  .  This  gets  them  through  this  year  with  claiming  they  didn’t  raise  any  taxes.  Next  year  is  another  story  all  together. It  will  get  tougher  each  year.

Editor’s Note: Bob is correct. The concept of “holding the line” on the size of government is an idea that needs to be retired. We have grown government too much too fast at every level. Once a program is implemented, it is permanent. If it is deemed a failure, they generally throw more money into it.

Our government is bloated at every level. In good economic years, increased revenue inevitably leads to expanded government spending. In a prolonged downturn, in which we currently find ourselves, it is impossible to hold the line on spending without eventually raising taxes.

This mindset must change!
