Op Ed: Will We Ever Learn?

The following is a letter from Bob Shannon, a leading local activist. There are a lot of people urging Governor McDonnell to sign HB 1160. Virginia Right! also urges the Governor to sign the bill into law.

Once  again  we  find  ourselves  wringing  our  hands  and  burying  each  other  with  panic  e-mails  urging  one  another  to  “call  the  Governor”  and  urge  him  to  sign  H.B 1160  into  law. Is  anyone  genuinely  surprised  Governor  McDonnell  is  reluctant  to  sign  this  ?  Perhaps  you  are  still  suffering  from  that  chronic  condition  of  “conservatitis”   normally  associated  with  a   resistance  to  seeing  the  facts  for  what  they  are.    Symptoms  include  believing  that  someone  is  a  conservative  because  they  call  themselves  one. Often  times  you  will  find  the  need  to  clean  sand  from  your  ears,  normally a  result  of  having  your  head  buried  in  it  for  prolonged  periods.

Is  the  bill  worth  signing  to  begin  with,  or  just  another  feel  good  bill  meant  to  appease  the  TEA Party types ? They  wipe  their  feet  on  the  U.S  Constitution  daily, and  have  for  years.  Why  do  you  believe  a  piece  of  paper  with  McDonnell’s  signature  on  it  will  make  any  difference. How  many  in  the  G.A  or Congress  have  actually  kept  their  sworn  oath  to  protect, preserve  and  defend  the  Constitution ,so  help  me  God ? We  are  treating  once  again  the  symptoms  and  not  the  disease.

There are two  types  of  elected  officials,  the  ones  that  serve  to  solve  problems,  the  ones  who  serve  to  serve  themselves.  George W. Bush  exposed  himself  when  he  signed  into  law  the  Prescription  Drug Act.  He  wanted  a  second  term  more  than  he  wanted  to  keep  Medicare  solvent,  let  someone  down  the  road  fix  it.  McDonnell  has  his  future  political  aspirations  at  the  forefront  of  his  thought  process,, just  how  will signing  this  impact  my  ambitions ?  Standing  up  to  the  Fed’s  is  a  damn  sideshow.

Political  leverage  is  acquired  through  the  use  of  power,  raw  power.  The  establishment  types  are  not  going  to  willingly  hand  it  over.  We  have  just  that  political  leverage  but  like  an  infant  learning   a  new  skill,  we  just  are not  sure  how  to  use  it.

The  bullies  will  just  keep  taking  your  lunch  money  until  you  demonstrate  you  won’t  let  them.  Keep  hoping  the  strategy  of  playing  nice  pays  off.  While  you  are  waiting,  clean  the  sand  out  of  your  ears.
