PA-12 (Murtha Seat) Message to Republicans and Democrats

This was a Special Election to replace Democrat Murtha, now deceased. Democrat Mark Critz faced Republican Tim Burns in this Western Pennsylvania district with registered Democrats outnumbering Republicans 2 to 1. Despite the voter party affiliations, this is a very Conservative district.

Of course, Democrat Mark Critz won with 53% of the vote. There were high hopes in Republican circles that Tim Burns could pull this one out, but it was not to be. However, this will all get a do over in November, as Critz must run for reelection in the next general election. So, his win nets him 5 months, the remainder of Murtha’s term.

Now the Democrats are happy. Some go as far as believing this election is a sign that November will not be as bad as they had feared, and they ar “off the mat” so to speak. But is this win truly good news for Democrats?

Critz ran so far from Obama and Pelosi that most would assume he was a Republican. Critz is Pro-Life, Pro-Gun, Pro Coal, and in favor of reducing government spending and the deficit. Many thought he was the more Conservative of the two candidates and he simply never got the memo to change the “D” after his name to an “R”.

Critz is against Cap and Trade and says he would have voted against Obamacare. Heck, the Tea Party may have endorsed him if he was not a Democrat.

So, while the Democrat won, it was his Conservative Platform that carried him to victory.

Good news for Democrats? Hardly. What this race says is that in a heavily Democratic District, a very Conservative Democrat can win. An anti-Obama Democrat.

Now, if Critz were a liberal, or even worse, a Progressive, and won, the Democrats would have something to cheer about. The fact is, Critz is far more Conservative than Scott Brown, the 41st Republican vote in the Senate, who is most often the 60th vote for the Democrats.

However, the message for Republicans is not much better. It is only the liberal, Obama clones that the electorate dislikes. It is not enough to NOT be a Democrat. They still don’t trust Republicans, either.

The only winner in this race was Conservative ideas. But we already knew that before the election.
