Shame On The Richmond Times Dispatch!!

With all of the press leading up to the April 15th Tea Parties concerning left wing infiltrators and their efforts to sully the Tea Party movement, you would think that the Richmond Times Dispatch would be wise enough to not allow themselves to be played. Apparently not.

A video accompanying the Tyler Whitley story produced by George Lamm reduces the Times Dispatch to below tabloid journalism, and renders the paper unfit to line a bird cage.

To be clear, Mr. Whiteley did a fair and accurate job in reporting the event. However, at the 15 second mark in the accompanying video, a large sign with a homophobic message not unlike that of the Westboro Baptist Church, the group that pickets Soldier’s funerals, is given a lengthy exposure. This sign was not a part of the Tea Party and the person with the sign was across the street from the park. The impression Mr. Lamm intended is that this was a typical Tea Party enthusiast.

I am not a member of any Tea Party board, although I am an enthusiastic supporter. This blog has published well over 100 photos of several Tea Parties and the image Lamm pushes out is absolutely disingenuous. Lamm intentionally zoomed in on this sign and failed to provide the perspective of the gentleman’s location: across the street.

I am sorely disappointed that the Richmond Times Dispatch would allow such outright dishonesty in their publication.

After speaking to members of the Richmond Tea Party prior to the event, they were keenly aware that there was the possibility of “crashers” attending the event. These people are entitled to their message, but the Tea Party organizers wanted to make sure their free speech rights were practiced in such a way that it was clear their message is not that of the Tea Party movement.

The Richmond Tea Party organizers and volunteers did an outstanding job of presenting a positive message for limited government and liberty for all Americans. It is a shame that the Times Dispatch does not police it’s video productions for truth and honesty and disparages the months of hard work these individuals put into the Richmond Tea Party event.

Well said, Mr. White. It is apparent that Mr. Lamm arrived with an agenda and was intent on besmirching the Tea Party movement.

Even if this nut was there as a Tea Partier, it was not even remotely representative of the signs that were there, the people that were there or the message of the movement.

I defy Mr. Lamm to attend any assemblage 4,000 leftists for any event without at least 400 kooks in attendance, mass bad behavior and litter. At Tea Party events, the crowds are cheerful, polite and they leave not so much as a shred of litter. Both events were like that, so I agree, Tom, perhaps not Shame on the RTD, but SHAME on YOU George Lamm.

I was there. The homophobic sign referenced here was not from a left wing infiltrator, nor a tea party supporter. These were counter-protesters.

In fact, this is where the Times Dispatch article is factionally inaccurate. Tyler Whitley states that there was no counter-protest. Although the counter-protesters were not necessarily left wing, they were necessarily against the Tea Party Movement and they were the ones holding the homophobic sign across the street.

This handful of counter-protesters did not just carry signs, they carried a bullhorn. Through the bullhorn they denounced the Tea Party Movement on religious grounds. Even though they amplified their message that god would not approve of the tea party protest, and that whatever we pay in taxes won’t matter “in a thousand years”, somehow both Mr. Whitley and Mr. Lamm missed that these people were against the Tea Party movement, not for it.

Could it be that the religious zealot counter protesters fit their idea of what a Tea Partier so they did not hear the bullhorned truth?

er I mean that the article was “factually” inaccurate.

  4. My name is Norvell Rose. I am on the Board of the Hampton Roads Tea Party. I am also a former TV journalist. During our Tax Day Tea Party in Norfolk, I spoke about the “shame stream media”, blighted by corruption and riddled with infection. This is a clear example of why I say, “shame” on the hypocritical propagandists who perpetrate the big lie.

Very well written article Tom. I have calmed down now from my initial anger over the video in the RTD. I will just think positive thoughts and behave like the law abiding citizen that I am. And if I ever run into Mr.Lame again, I will refrain from beating the ever living snot out of him.

  6. Tom, Thanks for your measured and accurate summation. I have been angry at the RTD and Tyler in particular for their ‘reporting’. I am in the middle of writing to him informing of a few facts he seems to have left out. As I said to Jamie he is either biased or ignorant – or both. I saw and spoke with him at both the fundraiser and the rally. So I know for a fact he was actually there seeing the same things I was. No mention of the marvellous Karen Cooper, sly comments about our AG not speaking, almost derogatory and innacurate comments out the President of the RTP on it goes on and on. Thanks again Tom for keeping us informed. Cheers, Karyn
