The Only True Conservatives Are BOTH Fiscally and Socially Conservative

Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum has tongues wagging in Conservative circles about the “toll” of Social Issues on the Conservative movement. A recent comment on a post Is Governor McDonnell Losing Virginia Christians and Conservatives? is a case in point.

This comment buys into the argument that somehow Social Issues are not Conservative and are, in fact, a big government intrusion into our personal lives.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

First, let’s look at the abortion issue. The argument from the left is that abortion is a women’s health issue. But that is not true. It is more basic than that.

One of the most important fundamentals of the foundation of this country was the Declaration of Independence. And one of the most basic concepts of the Declaration was this single sentence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

The first and most important unalienable right is the right to life.

We have allowed the left to redefine when life begins. They have redefined the word conception! The word conception means beginning.

The Free Online Dictionary defines Contraception as:

3. Archaic A beginning; a start.

And the word Archaic is defined in the Free Online Dictionary as:

1. also Archaic Of, relating to, or characteristic of a much earlier, often more primitive period, especially one that develops into a classical stage of civilization: an archaic bronze statuette; Archaic Greece.
2. No longer current or applicable; antiquated: archaic laws. See Synonyms at old.
3. Of, relating to, or characteristic of words and language that were once in regular use but are now relatively rare and suggestive of an earlier style or period.

“No longer current or applicable.”

So, we have allowed the left to redefine when life begins and frame the argument to suit their agenda. Well, sorry. I reject that argument. Life still begins at conception no matter how hard the left works to distort the facts and the language. Life always has started at conception and still does.

The woman’s choice of what to do with her body ends with the sex act. The moment life begins we are talking about a new life. It is no longer just a women’s health issue, or just a woman’s body, but also a baby’s life, health and body. And both lives are this subject to the same unalienable right to life. And this is the point where the left tosses in the “rape or incest” red herring. More people win the Mega Millions Lottery than are conceived through rape or incest. And a life is a life no matter how it was conceived. And if it is aborted, it is still deprived of the unalienable right to life. No matter how hard you try to justify it, life and liberty are taken.

So outlawing abortion is no more a big government intrusion than outlawing  murder. In fact, they are exactly the same. An intrusion necessary to preserve the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing more, nothing less.

And not a social issue at all.

And the argument that opposition to “Gay Marriage” is somehow an intrusion of “big government” into the lives and bedrooms is absurd. In fact, allowing “Gay Marriage” is actually inviting “big government” in. The marriage sets up a whole set of “special” laws and rules. i.e. more government. To somehow say that government ought to stay out of gay marriage when what the parties seek is special government rules is totally ridiculous.

Marriage, as recognized by the law, has a set of rules and laws and tax advantages designed to create an environment in which to raise children. A legal contract (which is what marriage is when you are talking about legal marriage) makes it more difficult to simply walk away. There are the moral obligations, but we are talking about a legally binding contract of marriage enforceable in the US Courts. And a contract which must be dissolved in court. What interest does it serve the government to legally contract a marriage between two people of the same sex? None! But the interest of the state are important in a heterosexual marriage where children are normally produced. If one can simply walk away, the children are going to become dependent on the government. The only purpose of a government marriage contract is to keep the government from having to support children. The financial and legal incentives and requirements are in the best interest of the children, and in the best financial interest of the state.

The state has no interest or benefit from gay marriage. And to ask big government to come in and give tax breaks and legal protections and requirements for a union that will produce no children, where the government has no interested in keeping the two people together is simply an unnecessary government intrusion.

Opposition to Gay Marriage is a fiscally responsible position. Why should a gay couple receive tax breaks designed to keep parents together for the benefit of the offspring and the benefit of the state by avoiding dependency and lowering the chances of requiring welfare? It does not make sense and costs the government money (tax revenue) with no benefit to the government.

While the left loves to frame the argument for abortion and gay marriage and other “social issues” as far right religious extremists who are out of touch, these “Social Issues” are actually fiscally conservative issues. A contract making it difficult and financially expensive to dissolve a marriage actually is not designed to grant favor to couples that marry, it is designed to force them to stay in the marriage to prevent the state from having to pay welfare – requiring more and more government programs. As more and more children are born out of wedlock and the divorce rate has skyrocketed, Social Services had followed and a lot of our fiscal problems are directly related to the breakdown of the family unit.

It is simply not fiscally responsible to give same sex marriages the same rights and tax benefits as heterosexual couples. The state derives no possible benefit and will actually lose money. As a Christian, my personal belief is that homosexuality is against the teachings of the Bible. It is a sin. We all sin. That is between us and God. Not between the state and us, or the state and God. When the government invests in a heterosexual marriage with tax breaks, licensing and various other costs, there is a return on the investment. There is no such return on gay marriage. So there is no reason for the state to be involved. Period. Gay marriage is simply a bad investment from a fiscal standpoint.

The Conservatives advocating pro-life positions are simply advocating the basic cornerstone of our country. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. And promoting the family unit actually saves the government money and negates a lot of the need for social spending in the first place.

It is simply not possible to be fiscally Conservative without also being socially conservative.

We need to reject the left’s attempts at redefining things. They want more dependency and social spending. Their base depends on dependency!

Most of the social issues have sound fiscal reasons behind them. When Conservatives are actually able to put that message out and not allow the Liberals to contort the issues, they will win. Until then, people who call themselves Conservatives but want to stay away from “social issues” are only helping those who want more big government.
