Today, December 26, 2011 is the 20th anniversary of the greatest miracle of the century:  The dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.  The USSR was truly, as Ronald Reagan once put it, the evil empire.  The dissolution of this tyrannical state was truly a miracle from God.  There is no other response from a believer in Christ.

The disolution of the Soviet Union was a victory for the strategy started by Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, and such heroes as Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel.  (There were others of course).  Now, the Reagan strategy had no assurance of success.  That is why it was a miracle.  The USSR had both the will and the means to carry out its terror policies – in 1956, crushing freedom in Hungary, in 1968 in Czechoslovakia, and nearly again in 1980 in Poland.   The Soviet State had no hesitation to send its opponents to the Gulag or worse.

It is amazing and miraculous that the communist system could raise up a leader as ethical as Mikhail Gorbachev.  He must be recognized as a force for liberty.  I believe it was a imperfect force.  But a force for some kind of good, as he saw good.  Gorbachev was prodded by events, history, heroes like Andrei Sakharov and Boris Yeltsin, and by the Holy Spirit (although Gorbachev did not recognize the Spirit’s leading in those terms.

But Gorbachev tried to save the Soviet Union, first in its existent form and then in a looser federation, but there was too much evil and imperialism for the Soviet Union to remain in any form.  So on December 31, 1991, the Soviet Union ceased to be.  A wonderful Christmas present for the entire world.

There is a lesson for this nation as well.  For all its power, the USSR was utterly destroyed.  For all its willingness to use and exercise military power, the USSR could not survive.  The USA is not exempt from God’s righteous judgments.

“Righteousness exalteth a nation:  but sin in a reproach to any people.”  Proverbs 14:34 (KJV)

Perhaps it is the millions of believers in Christ that has stayed judgment.  Perhaps it is the willingness of US believers to take the Gospel to all corners of the world for generations that has stayed judgment.  We need to pray and repent of the sins of our people.  We need as followers of Christ to seek personal and corporate revival for the church.

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”  II Cor. 7:14 (KJV)

If any of my readers want to know how to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour, go here!

It is good to remember the bad ol’ days when the USSR was around.  It is better to ponder the dissolution of the Soviet Union.  It was indeed the miracle of the 20th Century.
