Welfare and Entitlements: The Democrat’s Honeypot Voter Trap

Welfare is supposed to be there to give recipients the basic needs support and enough to get by until they can get back on their feet.

Unfortunately, that is no longer true. Liberals have been enriching welfare so much fo so long that if you fall on hard times and need a little help to get by, the Democrats have made it a Hotel California proposition – you can check out any time you like – but you can never leave.

Many have started out needing just a bit of assistance, especially if they lose their job. Food Stamps (SNAP) are generally the gateway benefit to full blown entrapment in the welfare system.

If you are laid off, you may qualify for Food Stamps even while you are receiving unemployment benefits. And once the unemployment runs out, for sure. If you have very young children, you may be able to add in WIC benefits.

And as the economy continues to flounder, and you are unable to find a job, you will eventually need Medicaid and even Section 8 Housing assistance.

And now, you are also entitled to free internet to help you find a job and a free Obama phone.

And even with all of that assistance you can still work part time for spending money, up to a point. And there are helpful government provided benefit calculators you can find online with your free internet service that will tell you exactly how much you can make before you have to give up some of the benefits.

How helpful of Obama!

There are also assistance programs to help you pay your electricity and other bills.

One website calculates that you can work one week per month and still keep all of the benefits giving you the equidistant of  a $60,000 per year job.

This is simply shocking.

So, the Honeypot trap is set. The Democrats get people hooked on welfare to the point that even if they wanted to return to the workforce, it isn’t as simple as just getting a job. Unless you can find a job willing to pay you $60K per year to start, you will have to give up something.

How appealing is it to go to work full time and be forced to give up a lot of the benefits you have been getting for free? When you can work one day a week and make the equivalent of $60K and have free internet, phone service, food and shelter, and medical coverage.

It literally does not pay you to get a job if it requires starting at a lower salary and working your way up.

A decade ago I ran into something similar in my own life.

When the tech sector collapsed in the early 2000’s, my company downsized by quite a bit, and I was one of the workers who received the lay off notice. For the first time in my life I was forced to file unemployment as I looked for work. I managed to keep my Health Care coverage (COBRA) but my share was about $1,500 per month as the company I used to work for stopped contributing the lion’s share of the payments.

We had to dip into savings to make ends meet.

I had a good chance of landing a temporary job at a University, but it was a 50 mile round trip drive. It turns out that if I had been offered and taken the job that my unemployment benefits would be reduced dollar for dollar. And the 50 mile per day drive would be out of my pocket. So, by taking the job, I would end up losing money. That was something I couldn’t afford to do.

But even though the job was only temporary, there is always a chance that it could lead to more. Once an employer sees how you work, they may make room for you – assuming that you do well.

I was willing to work, even of I would see my unemployment reduced dollar for dollar. But I simply couldn’t afford to have it cost me.

And unemployment is something your employer actually contributes to on your behalf. So it’s not exactly welfare.

The Democrats know perfectly well that many welfare recipients are trapped. As I was. And they scare those on welfare, the elderly, the disabled and anyone else they have trapped into thinking that Republicans will take away their benefits and let them “fend for themselves”.

That is completely false, but it helps keep them voting for Democrats.

The system is broken. As long as welfare recipients have to give up something they currently have to try to climb out of the trap, we will not be successful moving them from welfare to work.

It shouldn’t hurt you financially to get a job. and welfare should not be used by the Democrats to trap people into voting for them.

We need to restructure welfare to encourage people to leave the government programs for a better life. Today all we do is lure them in and close the door behind them.
