Why Dave Brat Excites and Inspires

Like many of you, I had the opportunity to listen to Dave Brat last Thursday at Life Church in Mechanicsville, Va. For those who have not yet been to a Dave Brat event, I would encourage you to do so. There are few citizens running for political office in this country with the intellect and conviction necessary to inspire the people. I believe that if you were to listen to Dr. Dave Brat, you would be excited to vote for Dave Brat, regardless of who he was running against and regardless of his party affiliation. If you are not in the 7th District, I expect that attending a Brat for Congress campaign event would entice you to donate to his campaign, because even if he doesn’t represent you, it is obvious that he would represent a fiscally responsible and constitutional philosophy in our Capital, and that alone is something to get excited about.

What inspires and excites us? Over the years, and by no fault of our own, we’ve become cynical about the folks that represent us. Our expectations have never been lower. We are constantly electing folks with no commitment to principle, no political philosophy, and no ear for the voice of their constituencies. Dr. Brat is everything that our current representatives (Eric Cantor… Rob Whittman) are not. He has a commitment to principle, he possesses a very definite political philosophy, and he is deeply committed to the voice of the American People. Maybe more important than all of that, Dr. Brat is courageously honest.

I was struck by one particular answer during the Q&A section of the event. A gentlemen asked Dr. Brat about how he would handle the looming bankruptcy of social security and social security disability. Dr. Brat explained that at present, seniors are currently receiving about three dollars for every dollar they invested in the program. He would see the program pay out one dollar for every dollar invested. I’m 34 years old and I have absolutely no expectation of ever receiving social security. In fact if things do not change, when I am seventy years old I expect I will still be paying for the debts of social security spending for the folks who are receiving payments today.

This issue is one of the most politically difficult issues that we face. Young people are paying into a program they will never benefits from, while older folks are depending on these programs to survive. The American People were essentially encouraged to stop taking responsibility for their own retirement, convinced that the federal government would be there to take care of them down the road. Now we are down the road and the math just isn’t working out, but no one wants to state publicly that something must be done. No one in government wants to admit that Social Security is on a path to bankruptcy. No one wants to talk about the catastrophic impact this will have on our economy, on our taxes, and on those seniors who find themselves finally of age to collect on their investment and no money left to pay them.

Dr. Brat wasn’t afraid to speak on this issue. He spoke factually and directly. He did not tiptoe around the issue. He did not speak in generalities or make contradictory promises that would seem to satisfy every demographic. Dr. Brat understands two extremely important philosophical and scientific concepts: The Law of Identity and the Law of Cause and Effect. He is able to deal with the fact that there are facts and he isn’t afraid to speak about them. When was the last time Virginia or the 7th District had such a man representing them? Isn’t it about time?
