Virginia Right! Turns 3 Years Old!

The date was March 9, 2009. That was the day I officially launched Virginia Right! with my first post Obama Offers Russia Pay for Play With Missiles. Chicago style politics had officially come to Washington.

It has been an amazing journey since that first post. As of now, 815 people have read that post, but most of those reads have been well after it was written.

The most read post so far was a story posted on November 16, 2011 called Video: TEA Party + Occupy Richmond = Cowardly Mayor which has been viewed viewed by 31,934 people.

In 3 years, Virginia Right! has posted 3,641 stories.

One of the first major events I attended and covered as a Blogger was the 2009 Virginia Republican Convention where the Delegates selected Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli to represent the Republican Party in the November election. These three gentlemen would go on to win Virginia and usher in the new resurgence of the Conservative movement that would sweep the nation.

It was there that I first met a group of fellow Bloggers who were also given amazing access to the event and the politicians. Lynn Mitchell, known to all as SWAC Girl was one of the first Virginia Bloggers I got to know. And Greg Latique of Black Velvet Bruce Li and JR Hoeft of Bearing Drift and far too many more to possibly mention, but one of the finest assembly of individuals who, like me, were sick and tired of the twisted news source that the “Mainstream Media” had become.

Citizen Journalists were rising from the ashes of an old media no longer practicing true journalism. And this group of people inspired, taught and encouraged me to do what I can to make a difference.

In February, 2010 I was invited to CPAC as a Credentialed Blogger (thanks to Erick Erickson of RedState). This was my first encounter with the “National” Bloggers. They are a truly amazing assembly of talented and passionate writers who shared a desire to counter the propaganda from the left and to spread truth and honesty in journalism.

I met so many good people that year, but none more memorable than the late Andrew Breitbart.

The discussions and contacts I made convinced me consider expanding Virginia Right! by adding another blogger. During the drive back to Richmond from Washington DC after CPAC 2010,  I called my friend – Elwood “Sandy” Sanders and asked him to consider joining me in keeping the media straight and helping to make a difference. Sandy has views and opinions that are different from mine, although we share a lot of the same values. But the thing that excited me was broadening the scope of the blog to expand the audience and the value to readers beyond the sometimes addled thoughts in my head.

On March 1, 2010 I posted the announcement that Sandy would be joining me as a co-blogger on Virginia Right!

And I must say that having Sandy join me in this project was one of the smartest things I have ever done! He has managed to expose Agenda 21 and ICLEI and bring them to their knees, popularize “Curling” and bring in readers from the United Kingdom with his UKIP coverage and an uncanny ability to bring attention to more things that were hiding under the radar than I ever thought possible.

And I am sad to realize that I missed the second anniversary of Sandy joining the fun, so this will also have to be a celebration of Sandy’s second anniversary, albeit belated.

Virginia Right! would not be where it is today without Sandy Sanders. Period!

And a word of appreciation to Sandy’s wife as well as mine. When our wives first met, Sandy introduced his wife to my wife as a fellow “blogging widow”.

True ‘dat!

Sometimes it is hard to wrap my mind around everything that I have seen, done and been a part of. If you told me three years ago that I would meet, talk to and shake hands with Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, Marco Rubio, Allen West, Rand Paul, Steve King and many, many more, I would have said you were crazy.

And if you told me I would be on frequent conference calls with US Senators like Orrin Hatch, Tom Coburn, John Barrasso, James Inhofe, Ron Johnson, Jon Kyl, Mike Lee and John Thune I would not have believed you.

I have never met or spoken with Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, and others that I still hope to one day have the pleasure, but it is staggering to look back over the last 3 years.

I am not writing this as if it were any great accomplishment on my part. It’s not. I am no one special. I have no special training and I am not smarter than anyone else.

I am an ordinary citizen who is driven by the events and the changes that have come to America. This is no longer the America my parents left to me. This is no longer the America that the founders of this great nation envisioned.

I will be handing off a far worse America to my children than I inherited. There is no doubt of that. The damage is great and deep.

And while I know that when my time here is done the country will still be less than what it was the day I was born, I will do everything in my power to help turn it around and put the country back on a trajectory to make America what it was always destined to be. The Shining City on a Hill that Ronald Reagan spoke of.

The American Dream is a nightmare now. We have had bad Presidents in the past, but we have never had a President that hated America and was ashamed of our prosperity like we have in Barack Obama. The Progressive movement is the single most destructive event that America has ever faced. The threat and danger from following Progressives is more destructive to the American way of life than a nuclear attack could ever be.

No. I am no one special. And if you read this blog, we are exactly the same. We are true Americans who believe that this country is in decay. Yet we believe that the decay can be reversed. Because it can!

And it must be reversed.

When I was young, I was a Boy Scout. My Dad was the Scout Master. Whenever the troop would go camping, when we were done, Dad had one strict rule. We leave the area better than it was when we got there. It didn’t matter who made the mess or how long it was there. We cleaned it up.

That value lives on in me today. It is what drives me. I am determined to leave this country better off than when I found it.

I have not accomplished much in these three years, but I truly believe that I have made a difference. My mission is not one of self importance. It is not about me at all. In the grand scheme of things, any effect I have will be small. Infinitesimal.

But it is a contribution! It is a push in the right direction. And what I have done in three years with a keyboard and a camera has made a difference.

And if you have managed to read this post this far, I have a little secret to share with you. You have the ability and the skills to far surpass anything I have managed to do.

Get involved. I mean really involved. When you go to bed at night, be exhausted from fighting the good fight. Never wonder if there was something more you could have done. At the end of the day, wonder how you managed to so much!

You will sleep far better.

Be inspired by the challenge. Our opponents want you to get discouraged. They want you to give up.

They have won when that happens, and we simply don’t have the time to be discouraged.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do, and all you will do. We have a lot of work to be done in Virginia and in the Nation. Let’s roll up our sleeves and do what we need to do.

Godspeed.

And stay tuned for an important announcement later today. We will be launching a new site to help keep you informed with as little time involved as possible!

Is Governor McDonnell Losing Virginia Christians and Conservatives?

It is a fair question to ask, and frankly, one that needs to be discussed.

Over the last few days I have published several posts written by others expressing concern, disappointment and a lot of frustration at the behavior of Governor McDonnell, a man that these people worked so hard to put in office.

No one expected that we would agree on everything. Life is just not that simple.

But most were confident that they knew Bob McDonnell and what was in his heart, especially when it comes down to basic human values, the sanctity of life and his support of Christian values.

While we expected to have our differences on some issues, the sanctity of life was not one of those issues where we expected problems.

And yet, here we are, facing what can only be called a betrayal of trust and a crisis of faith in the man we thought we knew, Bob McDonnell.

The buzz has grown to an audible level as bewilderment turns to anger.

Redstate had a post on the issue this morning saying McDonnell has hung the Virginia GOP out to dry:

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, a Romney supporter and leading contender for the VP spot on a Romney-headed ticket, demonstrated his complete philosophical alignment with Romney yesterday by flipflopping on a bill he has championed and in the process hanging VA GOP delegates out to dry.

For those who haven’t been paying attention, Virginia’s legislature has been going after the abortion industry root and branch. Last year they passed a law requiring aborttoirs to be regulated as if they did what they do: perform a surgical procedure which can be life threatening. This year a bill is being finalized that requires a woman seeking an abortion to see ultrasound pictures of the baby. Somehow this bill, which does not require any medical procedure the woman was not going to receive in the first place, has the pro-abortion lobby in a tizzy. Dahlia Lithwick at Slate has predictably styled this as rape.

Up until yesterday, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell had unconditionally supported the bill.

There is an update on the post now which reads “I’m informed by someone very much in touch with the Virginia political scene that the root of the problem is that Bob McDonnell’s staff are, at the best, pro-life squishes and they are presently negotiating with themselves over the best way of selling out.”

Which, if true, is even more disturbing than the Governor simply going back on his word. If it is his staff that are running things, then it makes a discussion that I had with a couple of Conservative friends yesterday even more on point.

It is no secret that Bob McDonnell has his eye on a Vice Presidential nod by the Virginia Republican Establishment’s Anointed Candidate Mitt Romney. And while most of the nation’s and Virginia’s Conservatives watch Romney languish in his attempts to convince an electorate that has been burned by the failed bids of Bob Dole and John McCain, also Republican Anointed Candidates, that a New England Republican is a Conservative, most Virginians are in the same boat.

Romney can’t break out of the 30% range for good reason. And that tells the tale that 70% prefer someone not named Romney.

But even as our Lt. Governor has taken the helm of Romney’s Virginia Campaign and our Governor has taken to the air to campaign for Mitt, the General Assembly is in a delicate time. Lt. Governor Bolling has been focused on the session at hand and has done an outstanding job breaking tie votes and fulfilling his campaign promises as well as his promises during the last election to push through the Conservative agenda. Kudos for his focus on the Virginia Senate.

One of my friends yesterday recalled the criticism that McDonnell leveled against Tim “The Absentee Governor” Kaine as he flew around the country campaigning for Obama and his ilk and wondered if the nickname “Absentee Governor” was not also appropriate for McDonnell.

At best, it is ill conceived to have our Governor give even  the perception that he is focused on his political future and more interested in seeing Romney secure the Republican Nomination than the goings on in Richmond.

It seems that just when Conservatives have finally reached the top of the precipice and purged the obstructionist Democrat majority in the Virginia Senate that has log jammed the Conservative Legislation that has been thwarted for years, our Governor has gone squishy. Or just gone campaigning.

It is a crushing blow to have our star quarterback with his head in another game – and not the one we hired him to play.

Shortly after Bob McDonnell won the Governorship he held a conference call for his supporters. While the main purpose was to thank those of us who gave up sleep to make calls, walked miles and miles to knock on doors, provided accurate coverage to counter the media bias, the then Governor-elect asked us to do one thing for him. And that was to hold his feet to the fire should he appear to stray from his promises.

Well, Governor, most Virginians are not happy with your performance this session. There have been few reasons to level criticism – until now.

There are more important things going on right now in Virginia. Mitt Romney can wait. Most Virginians are not sold on him anyway and see him as an anchor to both your job performance now and your future career.

The Governor’s inattention just when we needed him most is a hard pill to swallow.

And to be honest, you can count me among those who are feeling betrayed. And this will not be an easy one to forget.

Are Va Gov. McDonnell’s VP Hopes Clouding His Judgement on Pro-Life HB1?

We hope not, but given the fact that Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is often named on everyone’s short list for Vice President, and his strong support for Virginia’s anointed Republican candidate Mitt Romney, it is a question that is being raised often in Pro-life circles.

And we all know about the abortion flip-flops that Mitt Romney has made. He was for abortion before he was against it.

When it suited him politically, he was pro-abortion.

He has also been “personally” against abortion, yet supported a woman’s “right” to choose.

And now that he wants the Republican nomination for President, Romney is pro-life.

Of course, people’s opinions evolve. But it seems a bit disingenuous when such an evolution coincides with political ambitions. At the very least it gives the impression that one will say anything to get elected. And as this is just one of many areas where Romney’s position has “evolved” to align with the most politically advantageous position befitting the office and the times.

And it is this troubling aspect of Mitt Romney’s “evolution” that is the underlying reason he has been unable to close the deal on the Republican nomination.

And Governor McDonnell seems to be “evolving” in the mold of Romney.

No one doubts that the Governor is pro-life.

But HB1, introduced by Delegate Bob Marshall, defines “person-hood” as beginning at conception. And the lack of support on this bill on the part of McDonnell has pro-life tongues wagging and those who value the sanctity of life questioning the degree of commitment of Virginia’s Governor to the pro-life movement.

The Governor’s Spokesman Tucker Martin has said that the Governor “has significant concerns that this proposed legislation has major constitutional issues and may not withstand court scrutiny”.

However, the bill uses the exact same language as a Missouri Law that has already withstood a challenge in the US Supreme Court.

And Virginia’s Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has urged passage of the bill.

Most see the argument of “Constitutional Concerns” as spurious. The language has already passed scrutiny.

The talk “on the streets” has turned to questioning why the Governor, who ran as a pro-life Conservative, wouldn’t be working as hard as he possible could to see that this bill, which has already passed the House, is not on a fast track in the Senate.

The reason many object to abortion is that it takes an innocent human life.

And the only reason not to support a bill that states life begins at conception is if you believe the pro-abortion argument that a fetus is not human. That until a baby is born, he or she is not deserving of human rights.

So, the bottom line is, if you don’t support HB1, given that it has already been vetted as Constitutional, you are either not pro-life, or posturing for political position.

Bob McDonnell has been one of the best Governors Virginia has had. He is the most popular Governor in the nation and has a bright and promising political future, if he wants it, based on his record.

But if he is following in the footsteps of Mitt Romney and allowing political ambition to guide his moral compass, that is a shame. Romney allowed himself to slide down that slippery slope and his inability to put away the Republican nomination is a direct result of allowing his ambition to guide his decisions. And it is difficult to walk that back.

Bob McDonnell is at a crossroad. So far, he has been served well by staying on message and keeping his focus on what is right and just. And the politics has taken care of itself.

HB1 is right, just and a necessary step in defining the moment when God’s miracle of life begins. I would urge Governor McDonnell to look beyond what may seem the path to greater personal achievement and take the path of life.

Following the path of self-ambition is a dead end.

BREAKING NEWS: Former VIRGINIA CONGRESSMAN VIRGIL GOODE Will Seek the CONSTITUTION PARTY PRESIDENTIAL NOD!

Is it in the water?  A time warp?  This is the biggest year for Virginia politics since 1841.  Virginia native (born in Winchester!) and resident Rick Santorum was the first resident of the Old Dominion to win a major party caucus – Iowa.  Then Virginia resident Newt Gingrich wins the SC primary, another first for the Commonwealth.  And our own chief executive, Bob McDonnell, is on some short lists as a running mate on the GOP ticket.  It’s great news!

Now another resident of the Commonwealth has placed his hat in the ring:  Former VA Congressman Virgil Goode apparently will seek the Constitution Party nomination for President.  Here’s the Daily Caller article and a highlight or two:

In a brief interview with The Daily Caller, Goode said that his platform consists of four planks: limited government, border security, rapidly adopting a balanced budget and enacting term limits.

“If I’m fortunate enough to get the nomination of the Constitution Party, I will take as many votes from Obama as I would from the Republican nominee,” he said.

Sounds like a candidate to me.  Goode also thinks in the GOP primary, Ron Paul can win:
“I expect it will be a fairly close,” he said of the GOP primary in his state. “I think Representative Paul’s fiscal restraint positions will play well in Virginia.” Goode says, however, that he will not cast a ballot for either candidate.
I think Goode has something to say and if his campaign sends me stuff we’ll consider carrying it but I am afraid he could tip a close election to President Obama.  My friendly advice from a previous blog entry is:  Stay in states that are landslides for either one of the parties.  That’s still about 30-35 states.  And no, I’m not on the short list for Goode’s running mate; The Constitution discourages two from the same state from sharing the national ticket.

LOOKS Like IT WILL BE Romney and PAUL in Virginia! While I Am PERSONALLY DISAPPOINTED – It Is a GREAT TEST!

Judge Gibney has ruled:  While the requirement for a registered voter in VA as a petition circulator may be unconstitutional, the other candidacies were not hurt by that rule as they did not get the 10,000 signatures anyway even by non-registered voters.  Furthermore, they cannot now get the 10,000 signatures.  The Court did not strike down the 10,000 signature requirement.  So the law stands and absent a successful appeal to the Fourth Circuit, the VA primary is Paul and Romney.  Judge Gibney did hold the law is unconstitutional BUT that in effect these candidates waited too long to  challenge it, TV 6 reports.

I first urge all those whose candidates did not make the ballot to vote for Paul, either as a protest or to stop Romney.

I secondly think that this is a great test.  What will turnout be?  The Paul votes will turnout no matter what (Perhaps a freak blizzard on March 6 in VA?) and some Romney and the Paul haters will turn out too.  But what will tbe other Republicans do?  And the BIG question:  What will happen to the loyalty oath?  Many are calling for the VA GOP to drop it:

Gov. Bob McDonnell and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling joined in a call to scrap the oath. The ACLU of Virginia called it constitutionally flawed and indicated the group was prepared to sue on behalf of affected voters if the requirement remains in place.

I think it could violate the Voting Rights Act, although an attorney I respect very much says no:

So what about the question that my friend actually asked?  What does the Voting Rights Act say about this?  As noted earlier, the answer there is “Nothing.”

But Snook and Haughey raise a novel new wrinkle:  The loyalty oath was not passed timely by the state GOP:

But now we come to the second rub — if the Republican Party wants the State Board of Elections to require a loyalty oath, it is supposed to get approval of that 90 days ahead of the primary. And the requirement was imposed 70 days before the primary, not 90.  So the requirement could be challenged in Court, and the challenge would almost certainly be successful.

But the state GOP will reconsider January 21, according to the Virginian-Pilot:

Virginia Republicans will reconsider whether to make voters pledge loyalty to the eventual GOP nominee before participating in the March 6 presidential primary, a decision that has rankled many in the party.

Stay tuned!  The primary may not be the best, but we’re in it and Ron Paul is first on the ballot!

UPDATE: LOOKS LIKE the ATTORNEY GENERAL Changed His Mind. VICTORY May Be at HAND! AG CUCCINELLI (And Governor McDONNELL) Supports Emergency Legislation to Remedy the Virginia Primary JOKE!

It looks like the news is very good:  Breaking news – BOTH the AG and the Governor will support remedial legislation to correct the Virginia Primary Joke!

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is intervening in the Virginia presidential primary dispute and plans to file emergency legislation to address the inability of most Republican presidential candidates to get their name on the ballot, Fox News has learned.  *  *  *

Sources told Fox News that Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnellis expected to support the emergency legislation as well.
Here’s the details, according to Fox News:
Cuccinelli’s proposal is expected to state that if the Virginia Board of Elections certifies that a candidate is receiving federal matching funds, or has qualified to receive them, that candidate will upon request be automatically added to the ballot.
I think this is a reasonable and fair proposal but I concede that the one who posted the news on the Daily Paul is probably right about what would happen if Ron Paul had fallen short…
He [Cuccinelli] also happens to be a Republican. He is drafting “Emergency” legislation. GOP is all hands on deck with their separate set of rules for the insiders. We do not need to ask what would have occurred if Ron Paul fell short of the needed signatures:
But we are on the ballot and first spot to boot!  Let’s beat ‘em with the voters!
UPDATE:  Attorney General Cuccinelli has changed his mind.  I respect his decision and his reasons for doing it.  But I await a ruling or legal analysis that says this 10,000 signature requirement is constitutional.  Why did three serious candidates:  Bachmann, Huntsman and Santorum not even try to get on the VA ballot?  Because it was too much for them to spend to get on one states’ ballot.  That speaks to how onerous it is.  I believe it must be corrected right away in the courts and in the legislature, too.

AG Cuccinelli Expands Statement on Intent to Run for Governor

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli raised some eyebrows with the announcement that he would run for Governor in 2013. Most in Virginia Republican circles were familiar with the “deal” made between then Attorney General Bob McDonnell and then (and still) Lt. Governor Bill Bolling. Or most had at least heard the rumor.

In order to keep from a bloody and expensive Republican Primary, McDonnell and Bolling came to an understanding. It was more important for Virginia and the Republican Party to regain the governorship than any individual. In exchange for running for a second term as Lt. Governor in 2009, Bob McDonnell promised to support Bolling in a bid for the Governor’s job in 2013. Nice and neat and the money saved by not fighting a primary could be spent defeating the Democrats.

And it worked well.

And Bill Bolling announced his intent to run for governor not long after he was sworn in for his second term as Lt. Governor.

And Bob McDonnell did as agreed. He supported Bolling for 2013. We expected nothing less.

But the candidate who won the job as Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli, at the time a state senator, was not a party to any such deal. And it is hardly news when a Virginia Attorney General announces a bid for governor. It happens with regularity.

Bolling disappointed a lot of his friends and supporters with his statement more or less attacking Cuccinelli for not living up to the agreement between Bolling and McDonnell. Perhaps this deal was “sanctioned” by the state Republican powers that be, but that is simply speculation and totally irrelevant when it comes to Cuccinelli.

And who knows, there may well be more potential challengers for the Republican nomination. 2013 is a long way off with the 2012 elections looming in between.

Cuccinelli’s thoughts (posted below) address this “deal” and his views on the 2013 elections.

And another point that he addressed succinctly was his decision to remain in the job he was elected to do while he runs for Governor. Many Attorneys General have stepped down to run for Governor. Bob McDonnell is the most recent example.

And McDonnell was criticized (mostly by the left) for not completing the job he was hired to do, even though he thought it best for the Commonwealth to have a full time Attorney General.

But the lefty blogs in particular are screaming that Cuccinelli should step down because he can’t be Attorney General and run for Governor at the same time.

Ironically, they have no problem with President Obama running for re-election and remaining President at the same time.

It seems that their criticism is only for Republicans who decide to remain in office while running for another office.

Let the left not be troubled. I have no doubt that Ken Cuccinelli can do both. Well. He will continue to go after the overreaching Federal Government when he needs to, and he will continue to prosecute bad guys with his full attention.

But that is what the left fears! Not that Cuccinelli will be unable to do the job as he has done for the last 2 years, but that he will continue to stand in the way of the Progressive agenda.

And AG Cuccinelli makes a compelling case for both running for Governor and finishing the job he was hired to do.

From the Cuccinelli Compass:

Dear Fellow Virginians,

Time seems to be getting shorter and shorter, so the Compass will reflect that a bit, but here goes.

Four quick initial thoughts on the Governor’s race… in chronological order.  First, back in 2008, then-Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling and then-Attorney General Bob McDonnell made a private agreement. They agreed that Bob would run for Governor in 2009 and Bill would run in 2013.  Part of the deal of course was that in exchange for Bill stepping back in 2009, Bob McDonnell would support Bill Bolling for Governor in 2013.  I was unaware of the agreement before it was announced, and I had no role in its development.

The Governor will uphold his deal with the Lt. Governor.  My working relationship with the Governor is not going to suffer during the remainder of my tenure.  Additionally, I am as readily available and willing to work with the Lt. Governor as ever.  We are all allies in governance today and always, even if we will be competitors in politics in 2013.

Second, while I would note that some have complained to me about not “waiting my turn,” I didn’t get in a line and I am not in the habit of trying to stifle competition.  I’m certainly not going to stifle it myself.

In the Republican Party, we talk all the time about the importance of free markets and open competition.  It seems to me that if we don’t practice what we preach, we won’t have much credibility with others.  Not sticking to our principles has done our party enormous damage over the last 10 years or so (it gave us the current President), and these are traps I have continually fought against in my time in politics and government.  I don’t intend to change that when the time comes to elect our next Governor.

And lastly under this second point, I only recently made the decision that I intend to run for Governor in 2013.  It was not something that I showed up in the AG’s office to do.  Much of what I have learned and observed from the unique vantage point of an Attorney General has influenced my decision.

Third, when I do begin to campaign for Governor, I’ll begin the campaign gradually.  The reason for the gradual nature of the campaign of course is that 2012 is the most important election in which we are ever going to be involved in our lifetimes.  The stakes have never been higher, and my political work will reflect that.  I hope all of you are ready to pitch in next year, as Virginia will be at ground zero as one of the most important swing states in the country.

Fourth, I have let it be known that, when I do begin to campaign for Governor, I will not step down as Attorney General.  While other Virginia Attorneys General before me have resigned to run for Governor, its important to know that Virginia is the only state with such a tradition.  No other state does this.  Why?

Because AGs in other states are perfectly capable of doing their jobs while running for office (whether for re-election, Governor, or whatever).  I am too.

Would I have resigned to run for re-election?  No.  Then why resign when we get in the Governor’s race?

I said when I was running for AG in 2009 that I fully expected to serve out my term, and I made such comments in the absence of a commitment to run or not run for any particular office.

It will be a long road, and our journey will commence gradually as it relates to the Governor’s race.  And throughout it all, my top priority will remain being the best Attorney General I can be for Virginia so long as I am honored to hold this office.

There will be more to say on this subject later, but as for now, it’s on to 2012!

Sincerely,

Ken Cuccinelli, II
Attorney General of Virginia

IF NEWT GINGRICH WINS the GOP NOMINATION – He CANNOT (At This Time) Pick Governor McDonnell as His VP!

I wrote on this some time ago:  How Newt Gingrich is actually resident of Virginia.  When he set up his campaign, Georgia is his base of operations but he is legally a resident of Virginia. This ought to cause some soul searching among Virginia GOPers.  But it begs the question:

Who might be Speaker Gingrich’s running mate?  He spoke with Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell earlier asking for support.  Governor McDonnell called the former Speaker the “most significant Republican” (other than Ronald Reagan) of the last half-century!

Would Speaker Gingirch actually select our governor?  (For the record, I think Governor McDonnell would be a great VP for any of the GOP candidates!)

So, the most interesting thing will be:  Will Gingrich change that residence to Georgia?  The Twelth Amendment prohibits both the President and the VP from the same state (technically it does not but it says both cannot get the electoral votes of their home state):

“The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves;…”

Hence Gingrich would have to change his legal residence to Georgia to select Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell as his running mate. (The problem briefly arose when George W. Bush selected Dick Cheney as his VP in 2000.  Cheney had represented Wyoming in Congress but was in 2000 a resident of Texas.  Cheney promptly changed his residence back to Wyoming.  Problem solved!)  Romney had hinted that McDonnell would be a great choice for running mate recently.

With Gingrich surging in the polls (this will be, if it happens, one of the most remarkable political stories of the last half-century!) the question might not be moot.  There is that place in our capitol under the dome with the busts of the Presidents from the Old Dominion – will Newt Gingrich join them?

George Allen to Participate in the Republican Party of Virginia Primary Debates

I am looking forward to these debates. We have 5 really strong candidates running to face the Virginia voters in 2012. The first challenge will be in a primary contest with the winner moving on to face the Democratic Party nominee.

Please make an effort to attend a debate near you!

This message is from the George Allen Campaign:

Henrico, VA – The George Allen for U.S. Senate campaign has accepted the invitation from the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV) to participate in three Republican primary debates.  See the following letter from Campaign Manager Mike Thomas to Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins:

Dear Pat,

Congratulations on this year’s historic elections!

In 2009, with the election of Governor Bob McDonnell, Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, Virginians showed they were ready for principled, conservative leadership.  We saw that wave continue into 2010 and now 2011 as Virginia Republicans strengthened our majority in the House of Delegates and achieved working control of the State Senate.

This upcoming 2012 election will be pivotal in determining the future of our country.  George Allen believes it is essential for Republicans to discuss solutions to the important issues affecting Virginia families and businesses.  We accept your invitation to continue that conversation in the three debates sponsored by the Republican Party of Virginia.

The failed policies of President Obama, Chairman Tim Kaine and their Democrat allies in Washington have put our country on a dangerous path of sustained high unemployment, massive debt and diminished opportunities for future generations.  Thank you for this opportunity.  We look forward to discussing our positive solutions for Virginians and our Country.

Sincerely,

Mike Thomas, Campaign Manager

George Allen for U.S. Senate

Dear Friends,

I wanted you to be one of the first to know that today I’m announcing my support for George Allen to be Virginia’s next United States Senator.

Maureen and I have known George and Susan for years.

Like us they wonder what the future will hold for our children and yours.

It’s what motivates George to run today.

He’s focused his campaign on solving problems with big ideas that will help private sector businesses create jobs, unleash our abundant energy resources, and get America working again.

George will work to rein in Washington’s destructive spending and crushing regulations because too often they stand in the way of growth and progress.

We need George Allen in the United States Senate fighting for us.

The eyes of the country will be on Virginia in 2012.

This year we made significant gains – strengthening our majority in the House of Delegates to historic levels and ending the Democrats control of the State Senate.

Next year our sights are set on helping achieve a majority in the U.S. Senate.

And Virginia once again will be at the forefront of that fight.

The road ahead won’t be easy, but things worth fighting for rarely are.

Va Democrat Donald McEachin Spitting Mad – Suprise Write-in Campaign Launched by Republican Floyd Mays

I got a call yesterday from a reliable source that told me Virginia Senator Donald McEachin placed an angry phone call to a Richmond Republican Committee official complaining loudly about the write-in campaign that has been secretly launched to oust the liberal McEachin from his Senate seat.

Here is the information you need about Floyd Mays:

Here is a Bio on Floyd Mays.
Floyd is the Magisterial Chair of Varina for the Henrico GOP
Floyd has been a Conservative all his life. He has worked and donated money to many candidates such as: Delegate Chris Peace,  Gov. Bob McDonnell, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and many other Conservative candidates and elected officials.
He has been a member of the Henrico Economic Development Authority for over 15 years.
In addition, he is a small business man who is sick and tired of Donald McEachin’s liberal policies and agenda which is destroying small businesses and family.  Floyd is a rock solid Conservative.
Floyd Mays wants to work to make sure we, the people,  have more money in our pockets and better paychecks.
Please review the youtube video below for more information. The liberals in the Virginia Senate carved out a bit of Hanover County for McEachin. Conservative Hanover! If enough voters in the new part of Hanover that is now pathetically represented by McEachin, Republicans can send Donald the Liberal home – where he belongs. This is going to be a light turnout year and it will not take a lot of write-in votes to win this one. And the good thing is, liberal Donald McEachin does not have time to react. He has become lazy and complacent.
Send him home! Spread the word – Facebook – Twitter – email – tell your neighbors and friends!

Tim Kaine Shamelessly Fundraising From Suffering Hurricane Irene Victims

If Virginians needed a reminder of what a schmuck Tim Kaine is, they need look no further than his most recent fundraising letter.

Here is what Kaine had to say about the recent earthquake and hurricane:

Two natural disasters – a hurricane and an earthquake – hit Virginia in the past week. Millions lost their power, and countless individuals lost their homes as the floodwaters wreaked havoc on so many of Virginia’s towns and cities. But instead of coming together to provide relief for those who need it, Congressional leaders are holding emergency victims hostage in order to pursue a narrow ideological agenda.

Eric Cantor and other members of Congress said they would only approve disaster relief assistance IF they could force through more spending cuts in Washington. This is the same kind of inappropriate negotiating tactics that nearly caused America to default on its financial obligations earlier this month.

Actually, what Cantor said was:

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor assured his constituents on Wednesday that Congress “will find the monies” to assist earthquake victims in Mineral, Virginia – but the Republican lawmaker noted that “those monies will be offset with appropriate savings or cost-cutting elsewhere.”

So, rather than borrowing more money Cantor thinks we should look at diverting wasteful spending from programs like “Gun Walker” and raiding the Gibson Guitar factory to protect unions in India to the disaster victims. Sounds like fiscal responsibility to me. Of course, Tim Kaine is sure that Government does not wast any money and always needs more.

I suppose this is another example of Tim Kainesian Economics at work.

Virginia’s governor Bob McDonnell managed to spank his predecessor – none other than Timmy Kaine – by finding enough money in Virginia’s till to avoid a massive tax increase proposed by the former Governor. McDonnell balanced the Virginia budget using savings and common sense, something Democrats like Kaine find impossible to even conceive of.

But for Kaine to write “they would only approve disaster relief assistance IF they could force through more spending cuts in Washington” is simply a lie.

But the most egregious bit of the Kaine email was the fundraising “Donate” link at the bottom. Tim Kaine, the “ambulance chaser” of politicians.

Shameful. Virginians are smarter than to fall for Kaine’s free spending and wasteful ways again.

Virginia Has Another Surplus! Great News! Now – Return It to the People

Governor McDonnell has really done a wonderful job turning around the miserable hand he was dealt by former Governor Tim Kaine. We now have the second surplus in a row.

Virginians are happy to have a surplus, but if the State is simply going to spend it on other things, then the news is no news at all.

A surplus means that they took too much of our money. A refund is in order, not more spending that we have managed to without. But as usual, fiscal responsibility leads to more government spending.

Don’t wait for your refund, fellow Virginians. Once the Commonwealth gets a dollar, they will never let it go. The sudden bonanza has already been spent.

Fiscal Conservatism at it’s finest!

Here is the announcement!

Governor McDonnell Announces $544.8 Million Surplus for Fiscal Year 2011

Commonwealth Posts Back to Back Fiscal Year Surpluses

Governor Announces $132.7 Million Will Go to Rainy Day Fund; $93.2 Million to Transportation; Creates “Federal Action Contingency Trust” Fund (FACT Fund) To Prepare Commonwealth for Likely Future Federal Spending Reductions

***Full Text of Governor’s Speech to Joint Money Committees Attached***

RICHMOND – In his annual summer address to the Joint Money Committees of the General Assembly this morning, Governor Bob McDonnell announced that Virginia has posted a surplus of over half a billion dollars for FY 2011. The $544.8 million surplus follows the Commonwealth’s $403.3 million surplus for FY 2010. The FY 2011 surplus consists of the previously announced revenue surplus of $310.7 million along with $234.1 million in state agency savings and agency balances.

Speaking about the back to back surpluses, the Governor remarked, “These are extremely difficult economic times. At the national and international levels we face tremendous uncertainty and volatility. Here at home, Virginians are worried about their jobs, and watching their checkbooks and retirement accounts with concern. While we are all, to a great extent, captive to the same domestic and global economic trends, there are many areas that remain within our control. One of those is how we handle our annual state budgets. I am pleased to report today that, through bipartisan cooperation, we have ended the 2011 Fiscal Year with a surplus of over half a billion dollars. This is the second year in a row that we have posted a budget surplus. We have done this by budgeting conservatively, keeping taxes low, reforming how state government works, and investing wisely in core functions of government crucial to private sector job creation and economic development.”

The Governor continued, “Our fiscally responsible course has led to economic growth in the Commonwealth. The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate has fallen over one full point since February 2010, and is the third-lowest rate east of the Mississippi. More Virginians are working and spending, and that can be seen in the revenue growth that is responsible for more than one-half of this surplus. At the same time, our efforts to reform state government and make it function more efficiently have also produced savings. We have brought in more revenue, and spent less, than anticipated. That’s how we have achieved this budget surplus, and I thank General Assembly members of both parties for their leadership and partnership in this effort.”

The Governor also used this morning’s remarks to detail the disbursement of the FY 2011 surplus, including his call for the creation of a Federal Action Contingency Trust (FACT) Fund to help prepare the Commonwealth for future federal spending actions. He noted, “In uncertain times we must prudently prepare for the future. We will deposit another $132.7 million into the state’s Rainy Day Fund.  And we will ask the General Assembly to create a “Federal Action Contingency Trust” Fund that will help increase our ability to handle the impact of likely future federal reductions. I am recommending that $30 million from the surplus be used to initiate this fund. While we do not know exactly how federal spending will be reduced, we all know it will and must be. I strongly support efforts to reverse the immoral and unsustainable pace of federal spending. At the same time, as Governor of Virginia, I want to take every step possible to ensure that no matter what occurs Virginia will be ready. This FACT Fund is the start of that effort, and I hope the General Assembly will support our common-sense proposal to proactively plan for the years ahead.”

Allocation of FY 2011 Surplus

US Senate Candidate Donner Responds to Tim Kaine-Sian Economics

You remember Tim Kaine, the former Virginia Governor who left the Commonwealth in debt up to our eyeballs with a plan for massive tax increases, right?

Then you should also remember that his replacement, Governor Bob McDonnell politely showed Kaine and the Democrats that a bit of mostly painless fiscal conservatism and common sense could balance the Virginia budget without tax increases.

Virginia is but a microcosm of the country. While Tim Kaine and the Liberals are insisting that raising taxes is the only way possible, Conservatives know there is a better way. Bob McDonnell proved it.

Tim Kaine is once again demanding more and more money from citizens. What the rest of the country calls Keynesian Economics, those of us in Virginia who watched the budgetary destruction of the Tim Kaine Administration now call Kaine-sian Economics.

There is an interesting parallel between the Obama Tax Raising plans and the budget left by Tim Kaine on his way out the door. Both received exactly zero votes, Kaine’s plan in Virginia and Obama’s plan in D.C.

US Senate Candidate Tim Donner has a good response to the wasteful ideas from the Democrats and Timmy Kaine:

DONNER RESPONDS TO KAINE ATTACK

Great Falls, VA – July 24, 2011 – In his Sunday op-ed in the (Newport News) Daily Press, Tim Kaine attacked U. S. Senatorial candidate Tim Donner’s opposition to raising the debt ceiling by attempting to equate it to a willingness to default on America’s debt obligations. “This is the false choice consistently voiced by liberals, despite the fact that it has been proven that more than enough revenues are available to meet our debt obligations whether the debt ceiling is raised or not,” Donner explained.

Chairman Kaine then lays his cards squarely on the table, proposing the most reckless of all options – raising the debt ceiling with no strings attached, and postponing the debate over spending cuts until after we add another $2.5 trillion to a national debt that now tops $14 trillion.

Digging deep into the Democrat play book, Mr. Kaine employed the usual liberal code language in stating his position.  In favoring a “balanced approach,” he means raising taxes in the middle of an economic downturn. In saying Republican plans “ask nothing of wealthy individuals and corporations,” he is joining President Obama in a call to class warfare and demonizing the very instruments of economic growth needed to save the economy. In calling for “new revenue sources and strategic investments,” he is reverting to the same failed and discredited liberal creed of taxing and spending that has not only been an abject failure, but has in itself created the mammoth debt crisis we are now trying to solve.

“Let me be clear that, because of the failures of the political establishment, none of the options now available are simple or desirable,” Donner pointed out.  “But this is a moment of truth when we have an unprecedented opportunity to draw a line in the sand and accomplish the clearly stated desires of the American people to stop runaway federal spending, as expressed in the landslide elections of 2010.”

“Thus, I am in favor of holding the line on raising the debt ceiling unless it is accompanied by the vital structural reform outlined in the cut, cap and balance plan passed by the US House, but rejected by the Democrat-controlled Senate,” Donner reiterated.  “This bill would have advanced the same constitutional amendment to balance the budget and place a hard cap on spending that has been a foundation of my campaign for permanent change in Washington from the day I announced my candidacy. Anything less is simply not acceptable when it means adding trillions more to a national debt that has already become a millstone around the necks of our children and grandchildren.”

Tim Donner is a Northern Virginia businessman and small government advocate.  He founded One Generation Away, a free market education, research, and public policy
organization and has served for years behind the scenes on the boards of small government, free market and values-based organizations such as the Virginia Institute for Public Policy and Radio America.

Virginia ‘Surplus’ Spent Before It Was Announced!

Having a surplus in the state budget is a wonderful thing and a testament to the responsible budgeting of Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. It sure beats the mess former Governor Tim Kaine left the Commonwealth as a departing shot. And the fact that McDonnell was able to turn a huge Kaine induced deficit into a surplus is nothing short of a miracle in this economy – far worse since Kaine left office.

But in the same announcement came the news that the money has already been “allocated” – which means “spent”. The good news is that nearly half is to be deposited into the Revenue Stabilization Fund or “Rainy Day Fund” that allows the state to recover from unexpected expenses – which they failed to properly include in the budget. But at least it is not already spent.

But there was one really troubling line in the press release that should be pointed out:

The overwhelming majority of the revenue is obligated to predetermined areas of the state budget due to the Virginia Constitution and state law which governs revenue allocation in the event of a surplus.

So, it seems, that if the state overtaxes it’s citizens, returning the money is not an option. The state must spend, spend, spend. So says the Constitution of Virginia. Once Virginia Politicians part the good citizens from their hard earned dollars, there is no deposit, no return.

Perhaps one of our more Libertarian minded Virginia politicians would want to take a look at adding the option to return the excess tax ‘revenue’ to the people who were overcharged!

Anybody?

Here is where the “surplus” money is going:

Disbursement of FY 2011 Revenue Surplus (All numbers are approximate and subject to revisions):

$146.6 million: Revenue Stabilization Fund Deposit from FY2011 Surplus (Subject to Final Audit)

$32.2 million: Water Quality Fund

$23.0 million: Pay Transportation for its Share of the Accelerated Sales Tax

$8.9 million: Interest on Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund Due to Federal Government

$4.3 million: Tornado Relief

$7.5 million: For Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Obligations

$7.4 million: Supplemental Public Safety Funding for Sheriff’s Offices

From Remaining Funds:  Additional Contributions to the Virginia Retirement System to Help Ensure Long-Term Viability and Stability of the System and to Transportation Infrastructure

Statement of Governor Bob McDonnell Regarding Memorial Day Observance

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today as Virginia observes Memorial Day across the Commonwealth.

“As Americans across our great nation enjoy Memorial Day, I wish to remind Virginians that this holiday, first observed in 1868, is about more than cookouts, a long weekend and the unofficial start of summer. It is about remembering those who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and the American way of life. This year alone, 27 additional heroes were recognized as Virginians who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the ongoing war on terror with their names added to Virginia’s Wall of Honor.

These include United States Army soldiers: Private First Class Alvaro R. Regalado Sessarego – Virginia Beach, VA; Specialist Brian M. Anderson – Harrisonburg, VA; Captain Michael P. Cassidy – Arlington, VA; Private First Class Benjamin J. Park – Fairfax Station, VA; Private First Class David Taylor Miller – Amherst, VA; Specialist Morganne M. McBeth – Fredericksburg, VA; Staff Sergeant Christopher F. Cabacoy – Virginia Beach, VA; Specialist Matthew E. George – Virginia Beach, VA; Staff Sergeant Jaime C. Newman – Richmond, VA; First Lieutenant Todd W. Weaver – Hampton, VA; Private First Class Tramaine J. Billingsley – Portsmouth, VA; Corporal William Kyle Middleton – Norfolk, VA; Specialist Sean R. Cutsforth – Radford, VA; From The United States Marines, Sergeant Donald J. Lamar, II – Fredericksburg, VA; Corporal Nicholas D. Parada Rodriguez – Stafford, VA; Lance Corporal Cody S. Childers – Chesapeake, VA; Sergeant Ronald A. Rodriguez – Falls Church, VA, Sergeant Sean T. Callahan – Warrenton, VA; From The United States Air Force, Airman First Class Zachary R. Cuddeback – Stanardsville, VA; Major Charles A. Ransom – Midlothian, VA; from The United States Navy, Signalman Seaman Cherone Gunn-Newport News, VA; from the Central Intelligence Agency Elizabeth Hanson, Scott Roberson, Darren LaBonte, Dane Paresi, Jeremy Wise, Jennifer Matthews –Langley – McLean, VA.

With world events continuing to require our men and women to put themselves in harm’s way to protect our safety and ideals, the meaning of this day is especially poignant. I fervently hope that all Virginians will take the opportunity this Memorial Day to thank a service member in uniform and a veteran for their service in the defense of freedom, and to also remember all those who we have lost, as well as all those who continue to serve today.

Memorial Day is also a day to reflect upon those right here at home in our law enforcement community who place themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe. Since January 2010, seven state and local law enforcement officers have given their lives to protect and serve Virginians including: Tazewell County Deputy Sheriff Thomas A. Reid; Richmond City Deputy Sheriff Caroline Green, Spotsylvania County Deputy Sheriff Dean Ridings; Tazewell County Deputy Sheriff Shawnell Hess; Virginia State Trooper Mark D. Barrett; Buchanan County Deputy Sheriffs Cameron Neil Justus and William “Billy” Ezra Stiltner.

Seeing the sacrifices so many Virginians have made to protect us is a solemn reminder that freedom is not free and that we must remain vigilant in protecting our values and principles that make America great.

On behalf of a grateful nation and 8 million Virginians who are able to rest under the blanket of freedom our military members and law enforcement provide, I wish to personally thank the men and women who serve and their families for all of their sacrifices, and to honor the 27 Virginia military personnel and seven law enforcement officers who were honored this year for making the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom this past year.”

Va Governor McDonnell Declares State of Emergency After Severe Weather

~Governor Issues Official Statement~

Governor to Pulaski Today and Gloucester Today or Tomorrow; Administration Officials in Gloucester, Halifax and Surry Today

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in response to yesterday’s severe weather across the Commonwealth, authorizing state agencies to assist local efforts in response and recovery efforts.

Speaking on the recent severe weather, Governor McDonnell remarked, “Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by the storms and flooding in the Commonwealth.  I have declared a state of emergency to direct all possible resources towards responding to this event.  Administration officials are traveling today to areas of impact to assess damage and assist local recovery efforts.  In the days after the tornados in Pulaski, we saw hundreds of Virginians come together to aid their fellow citizens who were impacted by the tragedy in the region.  I want to thank the brave first responders and state and local officials who have moved swiftly to begin the recovery process following these most recent events.”

Governor McDonnell will be traveling to Gloucester County today or tomorrow to tour the storm damage and meet with residents, local officials and first responders.  Details on the Governor’s visit to Gloucester will be released later today.

A state of emergency is declared under state law so that state resources can be made available. The Governor’s emergency declaration ensures a fully coordinated state response to support local initial recovery efforts. A declaration also decreases time and paperwork needed to get personnel, equipment and supplies on scene.

A series of severe storms produced high winds, flash flooding, power outages, structural damage, and a mudslide in southwestern Virginia. State agencies are assisting by:

•           The Virginia Emergency Operations Center is coordinating the state’s response with increased staffing.

•           Regional emergency coordinators with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management are on scene coordinating with local responders and emergency managers.

•           Virginia State Police are assisting motorists and responding to traffic accidents.

•           Virginia Department of Transportation crews are working to clear debris and ensure roads are safe for travel.

•           VDEM staff are assisting with public information.

Significant damage has been reported in several areas:

•           A mudslide was reported in Carroll County.

•           Wind damage, including structure damage, downed trees and power outages have been reported in Dinwiddie, Gloucester, Halifax, Isle of Wight, James City, Lunenburg , Middlesex, Surry and Rockbridge counties.  The National Weather Service is investigating damage in order to confirm tornadoes.

•           Waynesboro City and Albemarle, Bath, Page and Warren counties reported flash flooding.

Reported deaths include one in Page County, two in Waynesboro and three in Gloucester.  None have been confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as weather related.

Though much of the flash floods and stream flooding reported yesterday have receded, runoff is expected to create river flooding over the next 48 hours.  Flooding is already occurring in Lexington along the Maury River and in Lynnwood along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River.  River flooding is ongoing and will be moderate to major on the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River.  Flooding is forecast in and around the Rappahannock and Shenandoah rivers this afternoon.

STATEMENT of LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR BOLLING on GOVERNOR’S VETO of REDISTRICTING LEGISLATION

And the Lt. Governor of Virginia registers his thoughts on the Senate redistricting plan:

RICHMOND – Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling today issued the following statement on Governor Bob McDonnell’s veto of the redistricting bill passed by the General Assembly:

“I commend Governor McDonnell for vetoing the redistricting bill recently passed by the General Assembly.  I opposed this bill because the redistricting plan adopted in the Senate was an egregious example of political gerrymandering.  It unnecessarily divided communities and violated the core principles of redistricting, which should include the drawing of districts that are compact, contiguous and have a common interest.  In addition, the Senate plan failed to achieve broad bipartisan support and suffered from a number of other legal and constitutional deficiencies.

“The Governor’s action gives Senate Democrats another opportunity to involve Senate Republicans in the redistricting process and produce a plan that puts the people’s interests ahead of political self-interest.  I once again encourage the Senate to consider the redistricting plan recommended by the Governor’s Independent Bipartisan Advisory Commission.  This plan could provide a solid foundation for future discussions.  The Senate has long supported the concept of bipartisan redistricting, and they now have a chance to provide the leadership that is necessary to achieve bipartisan redistricting.  This is the type of leadership the people of Virginia expect and deserve.”
