I have written several times about the restoration of the Appellate Defender’s office in Virginia. The Indigent Defense Commission had to abolish the office due to budget cuts. Now you can do something about it! Email your senator if you are in his or her district (especially the Republicans!) or can if a Virginia voter, [...]

This is the letter I am sending to many places tonight or over the next few days: I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this issue with you. I appreciate your time. The Appellate Defender’s office would make the promise of Gideon closer to fulfillment in our Commonwealth. In 2009 the IDC abolished the Appellate Defender’s [...]

As my readers know my Favorite Democrat was Rep. Heath Shuler of NC, the former Redskins and Saints QB, and conservative member of the House. I even nominated Rep. Shuler for President! But I began to sour on Shuler when he refused to vote to repeal Obamacare and he did not run for Governor of [...]

We have been talking about the need for an Appellate Defender in Virginia and I am told by deep background that we could sure use a co-sponsor in the House of Delegates. I want to encourage all my readers to ask their House of Delegates member to co-sponsor the Petersen Appellate Defender budget amendment in [...]

I hinted that there was news on the Appellate Defender’s Office front. Now I can openly discuss it! Senator Chap Petersen of Fairfax has introduced a budget amendment (here it is!) to reestablish an Appellate Defender’s Office in this Commonwealth. It’s a tiny office at first, not even one quarter the size of the criminal [...]

I have a special interest in the VA Appellate Defender’s office: I was the first Appellate Defender in the Commonwealth from 1996 to 2000. In 2009, the doors were shuttered due to budget cuts and the ancillary fact the appellate defender was not protected by statute. I promised I would see about restoring the AD’s [...]

To some on the right, any spending cut at the Federal level is a good thing. And that premise is hard to disagree with. But not all spending cuts are created equal. There is a dark side to non-specific, across the board spending cuts. The budget amendment offered by Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) is a case [...]

Democrat Tom Shields is desperate. His internal polls show a big loss for him next week.
Laughably, he is trying to challenge Dr. O’Bannon in O’Bannon’s own field: medicine. His attack over the weekend (see this post) met with a polite correction from O’Bannon. In his response, Obannon said:

Delegate John M. O’Bannon III, M.D. (R-Henrico) today decried the most recent of his Democrat opponent’s negative mail pieces, which 73rd District voters received this weekend.
The latest in a series of negative mailers, all of which were authorized by Tom
Shields and paid for by the Democratic Party of Virginia, claims that John O’Bannon has not only worked against people suffering from Alzheimer’s, but is also to blame for the lack of a cure for this disease.
