According to Politico’s Playbook today, “President Obama has taped an appearance for Discovery Channel’s ‘MythBusters’.” Certainly, it’s nice for the President to show support for the science-focused education and entertainment that the show is known for, but it often feels like President Obama needs to be examined by a political version of such a show. Another day, another promise from Democrats about their unpopular health care bill is exposed as mere rhetoric as reality shows the opposite to be true.
Throughout the health care debate last year, Americans were assured by President Obama and Democrats that their health care plans would lower health care costs and reduce government spending on health care. In his September address to a joint session of Congress, Obama said his plan “will slow the growth of health care costs for our families, our businesses, and our government.” In December, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) warned that “without reform, health care expenditures will increase.” Obama said again in March this year, “[M]y proposal would bring down the cost of health care for … the federal government.” Later that month, some House Democrats based their vote for the bill on assurances the bill would lower health care costs. And when Republicans tried to point out that the Democrats’ plans would do none of these things, Baucus had a typical response: “Mr. President, the Republican Leader just a few moments ago says that this bill raises costs. With all due respect to my good friend from Kentucky, that statement is false.”

Virginia Right! had the opportunity to speak with Republican US Senator John Thune of South Dakota this afternoon on a conference call concerning the Health Care bill that just passed and the Senate Reconciliation votes taking place this evening.
On the bill itself, Senator Thune said:
“First off, this is a disaster. It’s passage is tragic for the future of America. Not only because it’s bad Health Care policy, but because of all of the debt we are going to pile on, the games that were played to understate the true cost of this and the tricks and gimmicks that were used betrays the future generations because it’s going to cost us trillions and trillions of dollars more than anybody anticipated.”

First of all, President Obama says the Health Care bill must not add to the deficit. Both the House Bill and the Senate Bill claim to do that. In fact, the Senate bill claims it will reduce the deficit by $127 Billion over the next 10 years. But, seeing that the Democrats added $176 Billion to the deficit FOR OCTOBER ALONE, these projected 10 year savings are rather anemic by comparison.
