Can Reconciliation Be Used To End Abortion?

An interesting question. Now that Reconciliation seems to be the way Health Care related items are pushed through the US Senate, when the Republicans retake that body, it would only take 51 votes to prohibit wasting money on abortions.

For budgetary reasons, using tax dollars to pay for abortions should be immediately halted. But, beyond that, a healthy insurance industry is a requirement going forward. The government will have to take up the slack for any failed insurers. If it is reasonable to force Insurance Companies to cover pre-existing conditions, it as also reasonable to demand that they not cover abortions, most of which are performed for birth control reasons.

And a 100% tax on money charged for abortions performed would seem to be as sensible as taxing bonus pay. Think of this as a tax on bad behavior – like, say, soft drinks or high fat foods.

The possibilities of using Reconciliation to ram horrible government bills down American’s throats are virtually endless. The safeguards and checks and balances that have served us so well for so long be damned.

It is important for Democrats to understand that the rules are in place to prevent more bad legislation from escaping the formerly Hallowed Halls of the Senate. You are about to embark on a course that not only thwarts the will of the American people, but forever sets a precedent that lowers the protections we have from simple majority rule.

Majority rule is fine for most things. But when a major bill with such far reaching ramifications is attempted by either party, it is comforting to know that we have safeguards in place to force a super majority to agree, or not to pass it at all.

We are already leaving our children and grandchildren with the debt we are amassing, let us not also take away the little protection they will have against tyranny.
