Obama Gaff Shows He is Clueless on COBRA and Preexisting Conditions

President Obama just finished a press conference where he took a few questions dealing with the Supreme Court case and some of his more or less threatening comments from yesterday towards the Supreme Court. And he appeared to be walking back some of his inflammatory rhetoric and was forced to qualify his statement that overturning Obamacare would be unprecedented by saying it was an “economic” bill.

But the gaff came when he claimed that he gets letters every day from people who had lost their job and had just about exhausted their COBRA coverage and were still being treated for cancer. When the COBRA Coverage ended, they would not be able to obtain coverage because their cancer would have been a preexisting condition were it not for Obamacare ending denial of coverage for existing ailments.

This is absolutely incorrect!

Under the law prior to enactment of Obamacare, once your coverage under COBRA was exhausted, you were free to obtain private coverage and you could not be denied based on any preexisting coverage. Without Obamacare.

I am very familiar with this as I actually was in a situation a decade ago where I was laid off from my job. This was the only source of income for my family, and the only source of Health Coverage. I became self-employed but was forced to obtain coverage under COBRA because my wife had been diagnosed with cancer three times in the previous few years and I would have been unable to obtain coverage through a private insurer.

But as soon as I exhausted my coverage under COBRA, I was free to shop for a plan with any company I wished and we could not be denied coverage because of the cancer – because I had exhausted the COBRA coverage.

So when my COBRA coverage was completed, I moved to a less expensive plan and was able to avoid denial for the preexisting cancer my wife had.

Before Obama begins making up more stories about letter he supposedly reads at home, perhaps he should consult with someone who knows a thing or two about health insurance. Because he obviously does not.

It is becoming obvious why he has sealed his college grades.
