My recent series on the Young Turks of the Tory Party were well-read and introduced American readers to several rising stars in the Conservative Party.  But if we had a similar series on Young Turks of the GOP, a prime nominee would be the new GOP candidate for Congress in Idaho District 1:  Raul Labrador.

Labrador might be the Democrats worst nightmare:  A Hispanic (born in Puerto Rico) with conservative ideals endorsed by one of the Tea Party groups.  His positions are standard social conservative with some libertarian tendencies:

Raul Labrador has a perfect pro-life voting record in the Idaho Legislature and will always vote to protect and defend innocent human life. Raul also believes that marriage is between one man and one woman and strongly supported Idaho’s constitutional amendment protecting marriage.

Raul is the only candidate for Congress who has effectively advocated for strengthening families and the rights of the unborn.

Raul supports strengthening border security and cracking down on illegal immigration both in Idaho and across America. It remains vitally important that we redouble our efforts to secure our borders and control illegal immigration. In Congress, Raul will support real immigration reform that puts border security and enforcement of immigration laws first.

Raul is the only candidate for Congress who understands the complex immigration system and can propose strong conservative ideas for positive reform.

Small Government:

Government is bigger and costlier than it has ever been. Politicians in both parties refuse to make the common sense choices necessary to reduce the size and cost of government. As our next Congressman, Raul Labrador will continue his commitment to reducing the size of government and eliminating wasteful spending. Raul recognizes that we owe it to future generations to put a stop to the horribly irresponsible practice of spending money our government doesn’t have.

Raul understands that more government spending is not the key to improving the job market, strengthening the private sector and encouraging business growth is.

Second Amendment:

Raul is a strong supporter of the rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. He has always received an A rating from the National Rifle Association. Like he did in the Idaho Legislature, Raul will be an outspoken advocate and defender of your right to keep and bear arms in Congress.

Raul is the only candidate in the Republican primary for Congress who has a proven record of voting to protect and strengthen your 2nd amendment rights.

According to Operation: Vote Smart, Labrador is an attorney who is presently a Idaho state representative.  He was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Idaho in childhood.  He graduated from the University of Washington Law School in 1995 and served as a law clerk to a Federal District Judge (a fairly prestigious position for a recent law grad) and worked for a firm before starting out on his own firm.  Labrador has been criticized for representing illegal immigrants but he enjoys Tea Party support.  The Tea Party Boise stated in his endorsement:

Labrador clearly has more experience and more consistent alignment with the positions taken by TPB and our membership. He is also a strong, consistent conservative, willing to challenge his own party in Idaho on issues that we share. His longtime residency in Idaho and service in the State Legislature has better prepared him to serve his constituents well.

Labrador is a co-sponsor of the Idaho Healthcare Freedom Act, the second such bill passed in the several states (guess who is first:  The hint is Del. Bob Marshall!)   He also was cited by Boise Tea Party as opposing the income tax and supporting the flat tax, withdrawal from the UN, ending Fannie and Freddie (in fairness, I am not sure how I feel on that), and the gold standard.  Labrador also came out for repealing the 17th Amendment (that is the direct election of Senators) and abolishing the earmark.

Labrador’s Democrat opponent is hardly a liberal.  He has the interesting distinction of being the only Democrat endorsed by a Tea Party group (Tea Party Express) in this election cycle.  Minnick also returns home every weekend and has a very conservative voting record for a Democrat:  He voted against Cap and Trade, health care and the stimulus package.

The Idaho race ought to be interesting.  Raul Labrador could be a nightmare for the Democrats.  But he has to win first.
