It might cause surprise and consternation in the White House.  I can only imagine some flunky running into the Oval Office with a print out of this blog post and shouting:

“Mr. President, Mr. President, you’re not gonna believe it!”

The President says, “How dare you interrupt my latest unconstitutional executive order requiring all US cities to join ICLEI!”  (For the record there is no such plan afoot.)

“You still won’t believe it!”

“All right, what is it?”  The Chief Executive says.

“Sandy agrees with your lifting the embargo against Cuba!”

The President is astounded.  “You surely do not mean Sandy the Virginia Right blogger?”

“The same one!”

The Chief Executive shakes his head, “We might have to re-review this policy.  Must be something wrong with it if Sandy likes it!”

Well, regardless of what people in the White House say, I do think the embargo, while useful during the Cold War days, is simply another form of economic sanctions that did not end communism in Cuba or hurt significantly the Cuban leaders, but hurt the people and hindered help coming to the people.  It needs to come to an end.  I am sorry conservatives seem to be against it already.  It hurts the Cuban people.

Let me tell you:  The Nazarenes were about to do a Work and Witness trip (short term mission trip) to Cuba.  I was actually asked to consider going.  But there were so many rules the violation of which was a FELONY that it was a bit like cutting and preparing the fugu fish for eating in Japan.  If you do not handle the fugu right, people die.  It’s poisonous.  But if you treat the fish right, it’s a delicacy.  (I decline, thank you…)  I certainly do not get a warm fuzzy to do ministry in Cuba when giving the wrong thing to the wrong person might be a FELONY.  (It’s also overcriminalization, too but that’s another post for another day.)

We need a review of ALL economic sanctions against ALL nations (even Iran) with the goal of seeing what can be targeted to hurt leaders and not people.  (For example, I do support sanctions and prohibitions on advanced technology to nations like Iran who might be interested in a nuclear bomb.  But I do not support destroying the economy of Iran as that does not hurt leaders but rather innocent ordinary people.  It was silly for example to indict Bobby Fischer for playing chess for money in Serbia – another apology we’ll have to give to the Serbian people someday – in violation of economic sanctions.  Of course I do not condone or encourage lawbreaking but I do advocate a review and getting rid of most of our economic sanctions around the world.)

When we trade with and have open relations with Cuba, we can discuss regional issues and also the people (and some leaders) will see that liberalization pays off.  It pays off in better standard of living (although we need to preserve the ancient working cars in Havana as a national park – moving park – where people can come and see the cars actually in use!) and in freer dissemination of information.

Generally, in most cases, liberty and the free market work.  Let it work.  I urge the GOPs in Congress – don’t try to stop this or defund it or whatever.  Say, Hey we agree with Obama today.  Now as Scarlett O’Hara would say, tomorrow, that’s another day!
