Congressman Eric Cantor - at his Birthday Celebration

It has become an annual event, no doubt about it. The SWAC Mom / Eric Cantor Birthday Party at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond gives me the opportunity to catch up on all the events of the past year with SWAC Girl’s Mom. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of meeting SWAC Girl, or her Mom, you are really missing a lot!

SWAC Mom always claims her memory is not what it used to be, but then she recites, word for word, all of the posts for all of the Virginia blogs for the past month. She is like a silver haired verson of a human Google, only more informative. I was proud to say that I did best SWAC Mom this year. I had already seen the amazing picture of a newborn fawn on SWAC Girl’s blog, and SWAC Mom had heard about it, but not yet seen it. So I was one up on her. That will probably never happen again.

The crowd this year for Eric Cantor’s 47th birthday was larger than last year, but the Cantor team was prepared. Food, beverage, good friends. What more could one want. Perhaps 10 degrees cooler would have been nice. It was a hot one.

Congressman Cantor gave a powerful speech as he said America is at a crossroads. One path leads to more government, more debt, more taxes and less freedom, and the other path is the road we have been on that made America the beacon of hope to the world it has always been.

Cantor also asked for volunteers to help with his reelection so Republicans can take back the House and the Cantor Team passed out bumper stickers. Eric reminded everyone of what George Allen used to say. “A bumper sticker on a car is worth $300, or $600 on a truck.”

Congressman Cantor reminded the crowd that the voters of Virginia and the country had fired Republicans. The party had lost it’s fiscally conservative roots and drifted away from Republican beliefs of smaller government and personal responsibility. The Republican Young Guns are one of the answers to returning to the Republican Roots. From the Young Guns Website:

America is standing at a critical crossroads, and Young Guns candidates give America the best opportunity to move our country in the right direction.

Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Congressmen Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns Program began as a Member driven organization of House Republicans dedicated to identifying, recruiting, and mobilizing a new generation of conservative leaders.

During the last election, through a partnership of Republican volunteers, donors and 59 members of the House of Representatives, five House GOP challengers won against Incumbent Democrats in 2008. Four of those were Young Guns, and we proudly welcome them to Congress – Tom Rooney (FL-16), Bill Cassidy (LA-06), Lynn Jenkins (KS-02), and Pete Olson (TX-22).

Congressman Cantor also encouraged everyone to visit You Cut, a website set up to allow citizens to vote on an item to cut from the budget. Each week, the Republicans bring the winning entry up for a vote. Many of the savings are substantial. A $30 billion savings could be realized from reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and other budget cutting ideas are there as well.

So, there is much going on to win back the country. Republicans realize that they have been a part of the problem. Congressman Cantor is looking forward to retaking the House and returning America to prosperity.

A thunderstorm was brewing, but held off long enough for the program to come to an end.

Thank you, Tom, for the nice post about my mom. She said she was going to Rep. Cantor’s birthday party tonight (an annual event for my folks) so I wondered if she would see you. Glad you guys hooked up! She reads the blogs on a daily basis and keeps *me* up to date on what’s going on!!

Thanks for reporting back on the Congressman’s remarks for those of us who were not there. Oh — and that thunderstorm that held off until your event was finished? We held it back in Augusta County to help you guys out. 🙂

We appreciate the weather control! I thought the storm just paused to listen to Eric.

I saw Jane D., and even took a picture of her back (not intentionally). She was speaking with Chuck Smith.

Eric really rocked the house. The excitement and enthusiasm is far greater than a year ago. It is really great to watch the party back on the rise.

Nice dining with you and yours yesterday for the second time (Eric’s last party according to SWAC-mom; I leave all such details to her infallible memory). Eric has a super staff, most of whom we know, that did a super organizational job yesterday. Everything needed was there, on time and in place even down to birthday cake and ice cream. Did you notice that the event coverings were anchored to a series of huge white translucent plastic water barrels, each filled with water probable weighing 200-300 lbs.each? How else do you tie down a tent to concrete?? That tent wasn’t going ANYWHERE in any kind of storm. Only an old engineer would notice that. Swabby to swabby talk was most invigorating. Navy fundamentals haven’t changed much, that I can tell – only the equipment has been upgraded and become more sophisticated and deadly.
I also had a moment with Diane (?) Cantor, telling her how delighted I was to see all that public support for her efforts and capabilities in her service on various boards. She’s basicly a backgrund gal/wife taking a ton of ill-advised personal flack from people with a fraction of her brain. CTL,Jr.

It was great listening to Lynn’s Mom. She knew my blog. It is obvious where Lynn got her political leanings from.

  5. Tom White says:

Cal – You are always a pleasure to talk to. I noticed the water barrels and thought that a really cool way to anchor the tent. Diana Cantor is an amazingly bright lady, and if I remember correctly is an attorney AND a CPA. There is no doubt their kids will be amazingly successful.

Hope to see you and SWAC – Mom again soon. Always a pleasure!

    Roger wilco !!
