There is a new batch of liberty/sovereignty activists fighting ICLEI in their home town:  Las Cruces, NM!  According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, there is a move afoot to get their city OUT of ICLEI!  And they WON!  Here’s highlights:

But that isn’t stopping concerned residents from demanding the city end its involvement in ICLEI. They want the city to resign its membership as quickly as possible because they believe it is a threat to the American concept of private property rights.

“I am going to start a petition drive to cancel the city’s membership in ICLEI,” said Las Cruces resident Jim Harbison, who regularly attends city council meetings. “I know I can get at least 400 signatures in a week. … I’m planning on submitting the petition to the city in a few weeks.”

Go Jim Harbison, go!  He has won already one huge victory – Las Cruces NM will quit ICLEI and not renew it’s membership:

But [City Manager Robert] Garza said such a petition isn’t necessary because the decision was made “long before the current public debate” that the city will not continue its membership after its dues expire in about a year.

There was a exciting meeting April 4 where “conservatives” and “progressives” verbally jousted over ICLEI and sustainability.  It sounds like some rowdiness but who caused it is not clear:

Emails from both sides imploring residents to attend the meeting included some name-calling, and when representatives of both sides got up to voice their opinions to the council, there was booing, catcalls and general unruly behavior in council chambers.

Our side must be respectful to the elected officials and the other side – we are there to persuade not browbeat.  I am well aware only one can hurt a cause and that the facts may not show we are in the wrong.  But be careful.  Fight hard but fair!  Another VICTORY over ICLEI!  The liberty activists need to keep pressure on to stop sustainability in their city:

Within the past 2 1/2 years, development of a city sustainability plan has also been under way, and city council adopted the plan at its April 4 meeting.
