The Times-Dispatch reports that there is a renewed and ambitious effort to get Federal recognition for the six historic Native American tribes.

Legislation that would grant long-sought federal recognition of six Virginia Indian tribes is headed to the full U.S. Senate.

The bill would grant federal recognition to the Chickahominy, the Eastern Chickahominy, the Upper Mattaponi, the Rappahannock, the Monacan and the Nansemond.

I would like to see the Pamunkey added to this but we need to start somewhere.  Here is my prior blog on this issue.  Please contact Senator Kaine and thank him for his work on this issue.  Go to this site and use Civil Rights as the topic.  Thanks also to Julie Coggsdale at the FB page for the  Virginia Indian Commemorative Commission for this post!
