The BBC is reporting that by a huge majority, Parliament voted to defy the ECHR and express its non-binding will that prisoners not be given the right to vote. The vote was 234 to 22 with the remaining MPs abstaining. The legal analyst at the BBC is already warning that prisoners not allowed to vote will sue for damages and if the UK refuses to pay, Great Britain will be suspended from the Council of Europe. The response ought to be: British courts cannot award the damages and to paraphrase the my right honourable friend Br’er Rabbit: “Don’t throw me into that briar patch!”
