As far as I am concerned, the Olympic hockey tournament is over. Slovenia and Latvia must take their parting gifts and go home. It is down to Finland (16 NHL players), USA (25), Canada (25) and Sweden (24) for the medals. Hope the sports imperialists and the IOC is happy about what they did. Here is a friendly LA Times article about Slovenia.
“It stinks losing right now, that’s for sure,” he [Anze Kopitar] said after a weary Slovenia yielded four third-period goals to No. 1 seed Sweden at the Bolshoy Ice Dome.
“But I think in a little while, when it’s all said and done, I think looking back we’ve got to feel tremendous pride with what we’ve accomplished, just to get in this tournament and the way we represented our country here.
“It was a surreal feeling within the locker room, and I hope everybody else outside hockey and back home recognized what we did here and what we accomplished and how much effort we put in this thing.”
I think it is unacceptable for a nation to consider say 6th or 7th place acceptable when the competition is skewed against the smaller nations by the use of these NHL players.
Of course I prefer my home team win gold. And I think the real gold medal game is USA-Canada. But I’ll probably watch Miracle again rather than any more hockey games.
