GOVERNOR McDONNELL FIRES PORT AUTHORITY BOARD AND ASKS THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO APPOINT THE JUDGES OR ADJOURN; SENATOR SASLAW SAYS NOT SO FAST!

In an interesting story to me (and after all that is what matters here at Virginia Right!) Governor McDonnell has shown decisive leadership (the kind of leadership that ought to be in DC) in two areas.

First, he fired all but one member of the Virginia Port Authority and replaced them with new people.  There was good reason according to Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton:

Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton told media outlets the administration was not happy with production at the agency. He said many of the Board of Commissioners members did not understand the business.

I do not know the situation here but it was a bold step nonetheless.

The second story involving the Governor is his call for the General Assembly to either appoint the judges or adjourn so he can do it.  There are two state supreme court vacancies.  Most legal sources say that they will be replaced by two Court of Appeals judges thus necessitating two appointments to the appeals court.  The Governor has already asked for public opinion as to that issue (Here is where you can find the address for a letter to be sent) and also opinions from the state bar and state specialty bar associations.  There are also local judges that need appointment. There are right now only five active Virginia Supreme Court justices.

The House seems ready to act but Senate Majority Leader Richard Saslaw was less supportive:

[Speaker] Howell says there’s little his GOP-ruled House can do without the Democratic Senate’s concurrence.

Saslaw was as blunt as he was noncommittal. His response: “We’re back when we’re back. That’s all we can say.”

The administration of justice deserves better.  Either the state senate needs to decide or adjourn.  Remember the control of the Virginia Senate is up to you – they are up for election this fall.  Let’s flip the Senate and make Sen. Saslaw the minority leader!
