Bleacher Report has this article on Guatemala’s first Olympic medal: Silver in the 20 km Walk.
Barrondo received a call of congratulations from Guatemalan president Otto Perez Molina, who informed Barrondo that Guatemalans took to the streets to cheer his win. Now that Barrondo is a star in his country, he used his platform to encourage an end to violence. There’s not a much better way for an Olympian to behave.
I agree! Will Americans hit the streets for the basketball team winning by 80 points? Not in my house. Here‘s for those who may not hear it on NBC is the Guatemalan national anthem! It was played in my house and the flag will be brought out for a day or two and placed next to my Botswana flag and the Republic of China! Viva Guatemala!
