Hamiltons Opponent refuses to participate in CNU candidate forum

Newport News Delegate says opponent refuses to discuss issues, hides “behind her negative mail”

Newport News, VA, October 23, 2009:   According to a report by Kimball Payne of the Daily Press, Delegate Phillip A. Hamilton’s (R-Newport News) opponent has refused to participate in the final candidate forum scheduled for Wednesday, October 28th.  The report will appear in Payne’s column, The Shad Plank, in tomorrow’s Daily Press.

Hamilton had already accepted the invitation to attend the forum, which is sponsored by Christopher Newport University’s Judy Ford Wason Center for Public Policy, and the CNU Young Democrats and College Republicans.  Since Hamilton’s opponent is a graduate of Christopher Newport University, her decision to refuse to participate in this particular candidate forum came as a surprise.

“My opponent has run a campaign almost entirely devoid of issues and policy positions, consisting almost exclusively of an endless deluge of negative attack mail,” declared Hamilton.  “Now, she is hiding behind her negative mail, afraid to own up to the mudslinging and talk about issues.  The people of the 93rd District expect and deserve better than what her campaign has produced.”

This news comes after Hamilton’s opponent was a no-show at two forums held by the Peninsula Center for Independent Living and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) on October 15th.

Hamilton has conducted a positive campaign, placing a focus on major issues, his public policy positions, and his effectiveness as a legislator.  Hamilton has promoted a long list of accomplishments to demonstrate why he has been such an effective leader for the 93rd District in Richmond.

During this campaign Hamilton has repeatedly called on his opponent to come forward with detailed plans and stances on issues important to the voters and the Commonwealth while touting his record.  Despite these repeated calls, his opponent’s campaign has remained silent.

On October 14th, Hamilton and his opponent attended a forum in Williamsburg hosted by the League of Women Voters.  This was the first forum of the campaign where questions were openly available to the audience.

“Now, my opponent has refused to show up to a forum sponsored by Christopher Newport University, where she went to college,” Hamilton said.  “At the last forum she showed up to, my opponent called for more openness in government.  Now, those words ring hollow.  Candidate forums are open government, giving citizens an opportunity to see the candidates up close, discussing the issues that concern them.  If she’s not willing to participate in an event like this, where she would be appearing before the people she wants to represent, how could she be an effective voice for them in Richmond?

“My opponent needs to reconsider this misguided decision, and accept CNU’s invitation.

“I have always being willing to speak directly with the voters of the 93rd District.  I look forward to joining my colleague Glenn Oder and his opponent on Wednesday night at CNU.  And although I will apparently be the only candidate from the 93rd District responding to questions on public policy, I relish the opportunity to share my views on the issues that affect the people of Newport News, James City, and the Commonwealth.”

Delegate Phillip A. Hamilton is currently serving his 21st year representing the 93rd District in the Virginia House of Delegates.  The 93rd District is comprised of portions of the City of Newport News and James City County.
