Here’s an encouraging report on the leader of the True Finns party in today’s Finnish elections from a British newspaper.  Timo Soini may be able to shake up the entire EU.  He ought to get 50% of the vote in today’s election.  But this EU mindset will probably prevent that:

Admittedly, many younger residents of this remote corner of Europe are reluctant to support Mr Soini’s anti-Brussels stance, associating it with a narrow-minded, xenophobic mindset that EU membership has done much to eradicate.

“My generation is very pro-Europe,” said Jaana Haurinen, 32, a medical recruitment specialist. “Helsinki is much better now that it is multicultural and open. We don’t like the bailout, of course, but we just hope it won’t happen again.”

But the EU elites have already meddled in the election!  The EU Politburo picked their spokesman and gave the Finns the party line:

Only a week ago, the country got a headmasterly warning from Olli Rehn, the EU’s commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, and a native of Finland himself.

“I trust that Finland will show its responsibility and support this conditional financial assistance programme for Portugal,” scolded Mr Rehn, who is the EU’s most senior economic official.

But the True Finns leader, who is a MEP (Member of the European Parliament) in the same parliamentary group as the UKIP, and who attended the recent UKIP party conference, isn’t backing down:

“That is typical Eurocrat speech,” he told The Sunday Telegraph last week.

“Olli Rehn should do his job in Brussels and let Finnish people vote as they like. I will go to Brussels and say ‘Let’s renegotiate’. We won’t hand over more Finnish money to be burnt in the fire.”

We’ll see in a few hours.  If Soini wins or even does well, the EU will try to pressure Finland into going along.  But this guy may not be easily “persuaded”.  The Finns took on the Evil Empire and did better than some larger nations did!

What is needed in Europe is an pro-liberty party that can run candidates in the EU elections and also local/national ones, too.  (Perhaps help from a certain blogger in Virginia?)  Have a similar message and reach out.  No racists need apply!  Until then, can Soini run a summer camp for EU politicians?  Finland is a nice place I hear in the summer!

The situation in Finland has just revealed the common trend in other European countries which is the spread of nationalistic and radical ideas. Just look at the recent popularity surveys in France where Le Pen’s party has achieved more than 20 % of all votes. It seems that this kind of propaganda can really help some politicians improve their standing among their voters.
